SOLVED Network manager installed but still not working. No icon

Again I had a crash of my OS because of a battery failure. After reinstalling the system I found the standard network-manager icon in the panel. Now it has disappeared. Any and all attempts to get it back have failed so far.

I reinstalled network-manager, then plasma network manager (widget) and so on. Ethernet works but without any indication of its function or existence. Wireless is useless because I cannot open it.
I must be missing out on some obvious procedure or installation step.
What is it? And how do I fix the problem.

click on the panel's "cashew" and add widget look for the network widget,
OR
rt. click on the system tray widget and in its options unclick then reclick the check box for network manager.

OK, this did not work. I also tried just about any other method of fixing the icon problem that I could find on the Net. Nothing works.

I have a wired connection. WICD is working fine but I need the unfortunate network-manager because it works with broadband. WICD does not.

Please, how do I get nm to work. It is shown as installed but I have no way of connecting to wireless or broadband.

nm- applet on command line only produces an error message that points to a bug in 10.10.

I need some help, please.

Try this:

sudo stop network-manager
sudo /etc/init.d/network-interface stop
sudo stop networking
sudo rm /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state
sudo /etc/init.d/network-interface start
sudo start networking
sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager start

if you have WICD installed as your network manager, then you can not also have "network-manager" you will have to use one or the other.

Thank you dvnulljp and sithlord48 for the hints.

I had wicd installed only in order to get some wireless going. Since I used wicd for years now I am familiar with the nm/wicd conflict.

Wicd is my first choice. Unfortunately, I am using Virgin Mobile BB2Go and in order to connect to broadband I need nm. Be that as it may after multiple re-installations and other manipulations I finally managed to find the nm icon among the running app icons in the panel, though it does not show.

This may be due to the fact that BB2Go puts its own icon in the panel when it is recognized by the OS.

Sithlord48 you put me on the right track. dvnulljp I will keep your suggestion handy in case the problem returns.

Next I will contact Virgin Mobile to get the complete and correct modem initialisation string. If I can explain myself to them and they understand and give me the sequence, I should be able to connect to BB2Go via kpppt and to regular wireless via wicd.
