Wireless network not working after upgrade too 10.10

Okay, I've posted about this before, but someone else posted within my post so I wasn't sure which answers related to my problem.

    Here's my story:

    I have Kubuntu 10.10 installed after doing a Alt +F2 update-manager -d in Ubuntu.
While using 10.04 and 10.10 I had wireless, but today it's just gone. The driver is installed (the one in Additional Drivers called Broadcom B43 wireless driver).

The thing with this is I don't personally have wireless in my house, I used ethernet or usb cable. But 2 of my friends who I regularly help out to solve some computer (actually human) errors have wireless & I just login to their wireless.
Also every week or so I login to a wireless that's not to far from me - the company actually knows that I do this as I buy the monetary voucher from them

Last night it was still all fine and the light on my computer (Acer Aspire 3680 - ) was still on, but when I switched it on this afternoon - nothing.

I'm trying to get this sorted before I get wireless in the house. I really don't want to spend the money and buy a wireless router until the wireless on my laptop is constant. Besides I really need reliable wireless

UPDATE 6 NOV 2010: After quiet a few days of trying just about everything, I've decided that my laptop and Maverick aren't a good combination. I've done a fresh install of Lucid.
A special thanks to all (esp. GreyGeek) for all the help on this one.

Which wireless app were you using, wicd or knetworkmanager?

      Hi GreyGeek
      funny meeting you here

I had knetworkmanager installed, but have since removed it and am using wicd, which I find more to my personal taste.

Well, IMO, wicd is much better.

First, retry the KGear --> System --> Hardware Drivers and see if it can find the wireless chip and you can click the activate button. For that to work you have to have an Ethernet cable connection from the back of your wireless to your ethernet port on your PC because that menu option will attempt to download and install the appropriate driver.

IF that doesn't work the second thing I'd try is to open synaptic and reinstall (or install) the b43-fwcutter. (Again requiring an ethernet cable connection to the back of the wireless)

After the firmware is installed your wireless lamp, IF you have one, should turn on. If it does you can probably run wicd and make your connection.

If it doesn't come on you can open a console and try
        sudo iwlist scanning
and see if your wireless is displayed.

          Hi there
okay the Hardware Driver (b43) is installed/activated.
The b43-fwcutter was installed. So I uninstalled and reinstalled it.
The wireless lamp still doesn't light up.
Here's the output of sudo iwlist scanned.
          tanya@acer-aspire-3680:~$ sudo iwlist scanning
          [sudo] password for tanya:
          lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

          eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

The wireless isn't picked up, but I know that at least 1 of the 3 is on permanently. It was working before the upgrade.
If I can't get it sorted I'll have to fresh install 10.04 again, it was very stable/reliable there

Re: Wireless network not working after upgrade too 10.10

The wireless was detected by iwlist.

First, let's see if wicd still knows that "wlan0" is the wireless port.
Open the wicd network manager and click on "preferences". On the general tab of the dialog that comes up make sure that "wlan0" is in the "Wireless Interface" textbox. click OK to close the dialog and then on the wicd network manager dialog click the "Refresh" icon.

If the wireless access points are displayed you are good to go. Just configure your ESSID.

If they aren't displayed, open a Konsole and enter
            sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
then refresh the wicd network manager and see if your ESSID is listed. If it is then edit its properties to put in the connection type and the password. Click OK. Then check the box "automatically connect".
            Then click the connect button.
            That should do it.

If that doesn't work then let's look at the driver you are using:
            lshw -C network

If it is loading the wrong driver you can blacklist it with
echo blacklist wrongdrivername | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

                In a Konsole:
                kdesudo kwrite /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

and add the following lines at the bottom, to make sure other drivers aren't interfering with each other.
                blacklist bcm43xx
                blacklist b43
                blacklist b43legacy
                blacklist ssb
                blacklist wl

These just prevent modules from automatically loading at boot but don't stop manual or subsequent scripts activity from loading and running them. Then, clean up your system by doing

                sudo rmmod b43
                sudo rmmod ssb
                sudo rmmod lib20811_crypt_tkip
                sudo rmmod lib20811
                sudo rmmod wl
                sudo depmod

Some rmmod commands may give an error if the particular module is not loaded, but I want to be sure and cover all the bases for the b43. Removing b43 will turn off your wifi lamp, if you have one.

                Reboot.

                Try the wicd manager again.

If it doesn't show any wireless access points then close it and redo
KGear --> System --> Hardware drivers
                and activate the wireless again.
                Then rerun the wicd manager.

Re: Wireless network not working after upgrade too 10.10

I entered the command kdesudo kwrite /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
                  and got this output
                  tanya@acer-aspire-3680:~$ kdesudo kwrite /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Bus:pen: Can not get ibus-daemon's address.
                  IBusInputContext::createInputContext: no connection to ibus-daemon
                  sudo:
                  tanya@acer-aspire-3680:~$

                  I don't actually re-type the commands, I copy & paste.

Use this instead - kate is a default installed app:
                    Code:
                    kdesudo kate /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

                      Hi there

silly of me not noticing that I'm using kate instead of kwrite LOL

anyhow followed all the commands step for step and rebooted.
Went to install the driver in additional drivers and got this when i clicked on activate
Sorry, installation of this driver failed. Please have a look at the log file for details: /var/log/jockey.log

And what did the log show?

You can open a konsole and issue
                        sudo modprobe b43

                        then try wicd.

                          Hi GreyGeek
not sure which log you mean? I only got the error message.
Entered sudo modprobe b43, rebooted and tried wicd, but still nothing.
I might just do a fresh install of 10.04 and test it for a week or so. Because this is happening on Ubuntu too. So it's got something to do the the driver. But I can't really battle to get it going I really need the wireless to be up and running.

                          Txs for all the help.
