    Re: Wireless not working anymore

    Just a thought.....

Could it have stopped working after the recent kernel update? Strange things can happen sometimes.

Have you kept the older kernel to see if that works?

      Re: Wireless not working anymore

      I'm going to plead stupid . . .
I have no idea. I had 10.04 installed and upgraded to 10.10 via update manager.

Re: (SOLVED) Wireless not working anymore

        To All

thank you for all your help, etc.
I have now marked this as solved although we haven't found a solution.

For some or other odd, unexplained and/or weird reason I rebooted my laptop and the wireless is now functioning 100%. I haven't entered any commands or anything. It could just be as The Liquidator mentioned that it was a faulty switch. I'm having my personal technician have a look at this tomorrow.

        Cheers

Re: (SOLVED) Wireless not working anymore

Tanya, This may be off-mark, but one possible answer to the issue is an update yesterday.

One of the packages updated yesterday was dkms. Here's a brief description of what it does

          http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/dkms

There has been a kernel update since maverick was released, so it's possible that the update knocked out the wireless and the new dkms put it back again after update/reboot. That is probably more likely than a dodgy switch that has just started working again, but whatever the reason, glad you are back up and running

Re: (SOLVED) Wireless not working anymore

The Liquidator . . . to the rescue.

Could be just the update. Coz I remember doing an update sometime today. But I'm glad to be up and running again with the wireless, so now I've got to get my tutorials ready for the rest of the weeks' Gimp tutorials for windoze (snore).
But unfortunately they won't go over to Linux, but 2nd best for them . . . they'll just have to sit and drool over what I can do all for free and legal (evil grin)

Thanks for all the help anyway.
See you around the forums ;-)

            Cheers
            Tanya

Re: (SOLVED) Wireless not working anymore

I got fed-up with 10.10 and the wifi issue.. So now im trying out 10.04 to see if the problem is there as well.
I had tried to change the kernel in 10.10 but ran into problems.
If 10.04 works then it may actually be a problem in the 2.6.35 kernel

Re: (SOLVED) Wireless not working anymore

10.04 has been running flawlessly for almost 11hrs now. Wifi has been up, gone to sleep, wake and reconnect.
10.10 was the problem.. I think it is the 2.6.35 kernel

If anyone else is having trouble with their broadcom wifi card try running 10.04 and see what happens. Hope this will help someone else.

Re: (SOLVED) Wireless not working anymore

I am using WICD and wifi. It is now complaining about a bad password again. If I reboot and use 10.04 it works fine. Reboot and use 10.10 and it's bad password time again. I made sure that all the knetwork network-manager, etc files are out of the system. WICD version is 1.7.0.
PC is a Touchsmart running multiple systems. Something "broke" with the "upgrade" to Meerkat.

                    Re: Wireless not working anymore

I'm sorry to have to report that the wi-fi is down again on 10.10. I've booted up into 10.04 and it's perfect. Boot into 10.10 and it's dead.

I've updated 10.10, but it seems the update kills it. It's not just Kubuntu doing it, Ubuntu is just as bad.
I've been so excited about running 10.10, but will now have to do a fresh install of 10.04 because I really need the wi-fi up and running and reliable.

                      Re: Wireless not working anymore

After much head-banging-against-the-wall and tugging-air-out-of-head situations, I did a fresh install of Kubuntu 10.04. After doing an update via kpackage manager and then activating broadcom b43 drivier in Hardware devices and rebooting my laptop, I had the wireless working without a hitch.
So I'm going to report this as a bug. Somewhere along the line something just went haywire.

Thanks to all that tried to help. All is not lost though

I had an encounter with wicd's "Bad Password" error when I was trying to set up my DWA-160 usb networking dongle. It went away for me by installing "dhcpcd" & then selecting it on the "External Programs" tab in wicd's preferences. For some reason, it appears that the "Automatic Selection" option doesn't work.
