    (INVALID) Wireless not working anymore

Okay here I go again . . . making a nuisance of myself on the forums with all my silly questions.

    I have Kubuntu 10.10 installed after doing a Alt +F2 update-manager -d in Ubuntu.
While using 10.04 and 10.10 I had wireless, but today it's just gone. The driver is installed (the one in Additional Drivers called Broadcom B43 wireless driver).

The thing with this is I don't personally have wireless in my house, I used ethernet or usb cable. But 2 of my friends who I regularly help out to solve some computer (actually human) errors have wireless & I just login to their wireless.
Also every week or so I login to a wireless that's not to far from me - the company actually knows that I do this as I buy the monetary voucher from them .

Last night it was still all fine and the light on my computer (Acer Aspire 3680 - ) was still on, but when I switched it on this afternoon - nothing.

    Any advice for me?

EDITED 25 Oct 2010 - I've marked this as an invalid post (moderators feel free to step in here), but I opened the thread to have my problem solved or at least try to figure it out, but seeing as there are other posters asking to solve their problems & getting answers I feel that this thread no longer applies to my original question.

Before you upgraded were you using wicd or networkmanager to connect to the wireless?

        Hi...

You're not a nuisance, that's what we're all here for.

Just curious, does the network manager detect or see either yours or any other connections in the area?

Also, can you run "lspci" in a terminal and post the results? It might help if we could find out your chipset.

          Hi ardvark71

          lol, txs for that.

The network manager previously detected the other wireless connections around me (I every so often bought a voucher for one of them). Just keep in mind I don't have wireless in my house. I work off either ethernet or usb from my modem.
The wireless comes in when I go to my friends' place and use the wireless from a place closeby (they do know that I use their wireless because I get a voucher from them)

                MORE INFO

I just right-clicked on the network manager widget on the taskbar and saw that the radio button for enable wireless was not ticked. I tried to tick it to enable wireless, but it won't let me.

                Hope this helps

I have a similar problem. HP DV9408nr with Broadcom 4311. I installed ubuntu then converted to Kubuntu. My wlan card only works for short periods then knocks out. Blue light on the switch is stays on but the network icon has a red x or something and there are no networks being picked up.

I have to restart to get it working again.

I have tried STA, fw-cutter, ndiswrapper, all work, but knockout after a while and i must restart to get it working again.

Anyone know whats goin on here?

                    Re: Wireless not working anymore

it seems that I'm going to have to do a fresh install of Kubuntu/Ubuntu 10.04 to get my wireless working. Problem is that this is rather urgent as I'm popping out to a friend to help her with some Gimp-tutorials on digital scrapbooking and will be needing my wireless up and running.

But at least I won't have to leave Kubuntu behind, just go back to 10.04 for now until this has been sorted.

                    Thanks

                      Re: Wireless not working anymore

@snowflake_nz: in case of laptops there is dedicated switch to turn wireless on-off. or in some there is some combination keys.. check if it is in 'on' position.
i once reinstalled system and found that the switch was unintentionally in off position :P and there was nothing wrong with wifi.

@eynestyne: if u are using the default network manager, then yes, even my laptop used to give me problem of frequent disconnection and i had to restart to connect again. but since i upgraded to 10.10. network manager has improved. though it disconnect frequently it also reconnects without restart. its better to switch to wicd. it will solve problem.
                      to do that:
                      1. go to kpackage or my fav 'muon' package manager.
                      2. install wicd (package manager will install the dependencies)
                      3. remove network-manager (package manager will remove its dependencies)
                      4. restart/ log off log on

                      hope this helps.

I think the issue isn't a connection problem it's a detection problem, and am not sure that changing to wicd will do it. Clearly you should check that the

If you check in system /hardware does it say there is a proprietary driver available?

                        Otherwise I'm stumped I'm afraid.

thanks kapli.. I will try it and post back.

I was thinking it was not a driver issue as all the drivers i have tried does the same thing.

                              Hi The Liquidator

the switch was the first thing that I checked. I ran the live cd of Kubuntu 10.04 and installed the additional drivers (b43 etc) and the light on the laptop worked wonderfully and it picked up the 3 or 4 wireless networks I have around me.
At first it was working on 10.10 and then it just stopped. So I'm pretty stumped on this
