Gigabyte GA-880GM-D2H mother board

Has anybody else encountered problems using this mother board?

10.10 - no sound

11.04 - no sound - KDE hangs on logout

Will a sound card fix this problem - if so what card is the easiest to get (and pay for).

Would you open a terminal and type in...

lspci

and post the results? I would be interested in seeing what your particular chipset is detected as.

Disabling the onboard sound in your system's BIOS and replacing it with a PCI card is certainly a viable option. I'm not sure what to recommend to you that would be guaranteed to work. The rule of thumb years ago was that if the chipset and/or the card was from Creative Labs (i.e., SoundBlaster) it would work most, if not all, of the time. That may or may not still be the case today. Myself, I don't recall ever having a problem with older working cards from Creative using Linux. I've also had good results in the past with chipsets from Yamaha, ESS, Ensoniq and Crystal.
