cheers chaps, i'd forgotton how amazingly tedious it is installing a machine without an internet connection!
It seems stable today, and of course now its got a connection, its found all the updates! Im on the windows XP machine at the moment, the kubuntu machine is busy installing some 250 updates, so im leaving it along an hour or so
