VLC "drops sound" from some files

Vlc works great with high quality .avi and .mvk files.
But on some, lesser quality, avi files, the sound may suddenly disappear - typically after pausing or rewinding - and will not come back. In some cases, there's no sound to begin with.

Smplayer has had no problems with any of these files.

It's a bit of a bother, since Vlc is (and will continue to be; I will not change) my default video player, I wonder if this problem is well known, and if there is any solution?

Edit: since this post wound in the wrong forum - how do I move it to right place?

Re: VLC "drops sound" from some files

It's a little while since I used VLC but I did notice some issues with sound. I concluded that it wasn't too happy with pulseaudio.

Go into the VLC configuration and switch to alsa or OSS and see if that helps.
