    Canon MP640 Printer Wireless Connection

Have just purchased a Canon MP640 Printer/Scanner and need to connect to Toshiba Laptop by wireless.
Down loaded and installed Linux drivers from Canon Support as Deb files which appeared to install OK.
As a newby I need help to have the laptop recognise the wireless Canon and configure to enable printing through Linux.
Printer is active as wireless with Windows 7 on the same laptop.
    Thanks

    Hi....

    Welcome to the forums

Possibly one way to do this, from what I have researched (but never have done,) is to configure your printer through the CUPS web interface available here. Further information concerning this method is also available here and here.

Having never been through the process, I can't tell you exactly how it works but just click on "Overview of CUPS" (at the CUPS home page) and you should be on your way.

    Hope this helps...

Don't know if this will help, but when I installed my wireless printer, a Brother HL 2170W, I had to first establish a wired connection to set the printer up. This allowed me to open the printer interface, then I assigned it a static IP and set the wireless key to my router. Then I unplugged the wired connection and used the CUPS to find the printer on the network. Piece of cake.

@Detonate: I was just about to post to ask for help with the Brother 2170W! I have the printer configured for wireless and confirmed working when printing from the Mac, but how do I connect to it from Kubuntu?

I tried using Printer Configuration in System Settings. Here's what I did:

        1. select "New Printer"
        2. click "New Network Printer"
        3. in "Select Connection," I have three options, each called "Brother HL-2170W series". Each has a different Device URI:

        Code:
        dnssd://Brother%20HL-2170W%20series._printer._tcp.local/
        dnssd://Brother%20HL-2170W%20series._pdl-datastream._tcp.local/
        dnssd://Brother%20HL-2170W%20series._ipp._tcp.local/
After that, I get the usual options to choose the printer driver, the same as if it was connected by USB (which works, btw).

The setup appears to be complete, but printing a test page does nothing. The printer applet shows the job in the queue as pending, and it never prints. This is true for all the different Device URI options. How do I connect to it properly?

Use the CUPS interface and try to print a test page from there. If it does not print you will get an error message that tells you what the problem is. http://localhost:631 is where you access the CUPS interface. Open it in your browser. The properties for my printer shows ipp://192.168.1.99 as the URI. That's the fixed ip address I assigned to the printer. I love this printer. The only thing is that on this printer and other Brother laser printers the sensor that warns of low toner level goes wacky. And it is designed to sell you a new printer cartridge a long time before you actually need one. Simple fix. Put a small piece of electrical tape over the sensor "eye". Fools the thing into thinking it's always full. I can tell when the toner gets low by the quality of the print. I don't need this device.

Brilliant! Works perfectly. Love the new CUPS interface, too, very classy.
