Just a quick post, since I finally got the darned thing working on my own, I thought maybe other folks might be having a similar problem.
I knew that Linux would support HDMI audio out on the little Acer SFF I had in my living room, because I had previously installed Ubuntu Karmic on it and it worked "out of the box."
So I was a little frustrated when I couldn't find a setting to switch audio out to HDMI in KMix or Phonon.
The first thing I had to do was install PAVUcontrol, which let me select the HDMI out channel for my audio, but that still didn't seem to get things going. I could hear the speaker 'pop,' so I knew that a signal was going out, but for some reason the audio still wasn't making it to the speakers.
When I ran 'alsamixer' in the terminal though, I found a channel "S/PDIF 1" was muted; unmuted it and BINGO, audio over HDMI.
I'm sure I'm not the only person that bought one of these little Acers to use with the TV, so I hope this helps somebody!
