    My new Samsung printer

hopefully I’m in the correct area. Please redirect if not.

I just started using Kubuntu 10.10, no experience configuring anything Unix. Everything is working well but printing, just bought a new Samsung ML-2525W.

I’d be pleased to use the printer either through the usb port or its wireless ability. The usual procedure is not working for me as the ML-2525W driver is not listed in the data base in configure printers under system settings.

    I downloaded three files form Samsung ( http://www.samsung.com/us/support/do...s/ML-2525W/XAX ): PSU_0.92.tar.gz, UnifiedLinuxDriver_0.92tar.gz, and Smartpanel_0.92.tar.gz.

I figure there are three choices depending on preferences of install method or OS. Given I don’t know what I’m doing, the simplest route would be ideal. Any assistance, in the most basic direct language, would be greatly appreciated.

I'm familiar with my Samsung model not being listed. There is an additional set of drivers for Samsung called Splix. Install the package and see if your model shows up.

Any assistance, in the most basic direct language, would be greatly appreciated.
Ah, right. You will find it listed in your package manager as "splix" or you can cut and paste the following line into a terminal and hit enter.

    Code:
     sudo apt-get install splix

      Hi...

Splix may very well do the trick. Although your specific printer isn't mentioned, it appears that all the ML-25** series printers (that are listed) appear to work with this driver. Please see here for more information.

However, in case Ole's suggestion does not work, does the unified driver file contain instructions on how to install? Sometimes the instructions for command line installs are pretty straightforward and fairly simple.

Samsung supplies linux drivers on their website. I wouldn't necessarily install the whole package - just look for the ppd file and put it in your ppd directory.

            Re: My new Samsung printer

            Thanks all,

I've explored all options you've suggested, and in doing so, I believe my problem is getting access to the root directory in order to install the correct driver provided on the Samsung site. Samsung's install instructions for Linux don't address how to log in as super user or admin. I think that's where I'm at.

            Thanks again

very simply , step by step

get the .ppd file for you printer.
open web browser goto this address 127.0.0.1:631
this will take you to the cups config page
click add printer or class. (make sure the printer is pluged in and on)
click add printer (you will prompted for login info use your user login )
the machine will look for install printers, select your printer.. and press continue
fill in the info name locations etc.. (this is just labels you will see when u try to use it)
you will then be asked about a driver, use the "OR supply ppd file " to show it where you ppd file is
then click add printer, if all worked you should be able to print.

                Re: My new Samsung printer

                Hey all,

Thanks again. Three files were available from the Samsung site. None were simple ppd files, they were compressed cdrom images. I found this page and followed the instructions there. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1431620. The instructions were specific to my exact printer. What it has you do is to drag the install file into the terminal once you've established logged in sudo -s, giving you temporary admin. Funny it took me so long to figure it out and finally doing it was so simple. The package from Samsung did use CUPS as part of the install. Anyway thanks all.
