Penny, open localhost:631 on the computer that has the printer installed. open the Printers tab and right click on the printer. Click on Copy Link Address. Now open a text editor and paste what you just copied. You'll get something like this.

http://localhost:631/printers/HL-1240-series

Now go to the other computer and open localhost:631.

Open the Administration tab and click on Add Printer. In the next window that opens, put a check mark by Internet Printing Protocol(http). Click Continue.

in Connection enter the link address you copied, but replace "localhost" with the name of the other computer on the network. Actually if you can have each computer with a fixed IP address this works much better because you can enter the ip address here.

Click Continue and follow the prompts to install the driver and it should work.

BTW, under Administration do you have a check mark by Show printers shared by other systems?

The system with the printer attached needs to have "Share printers connected to this system" ticked and the other computers need to have "Show printers shared by other systems" ticked. If you make any changes to theses settings, restart cups in a terminal with sudo service cups restart.

Then follow Detonates instructions. If you are using DHCP you will need to use the hostname of the computer that has the printer attached. To get that info if you don't know it, in a terminal just type hostname.

Say, the hostname of the computer with the printer is "livingroom", then change this

http://localhost:631/printers/HL-1240-series

to this

http://livingroom/printers/HL-1240-series

This is incredibly complicated, it made my head spin after the first five lines

Is there no other way to set up a shared printer?
If not, this is something that to be done. maybe it can be stolen from te Mandriva setup?

Did you want a discussion on setting up shared printers and how it could be improved? I haven't used Mandriva for quite awhile. Even in 2000 they had some awesome tools (I have yet to find a suitable replacement for DiskDrake!). What about the Mandriva tool is better/missing from Ubuntu?

As far as sharing printers goes - I've had no trouble sharing my printer networked or via my server. It's simply a matter of learning the technique. Most trouble comes from the driver situation - usually lack there of.

In my case, I have two printers hooked to a server that I share simultaneously with Samba for the Windows machines in my world and via Cups for the linux ones. I spent maybe 1 minute setting up Cups and 30 or so getting Samba right (including file sharing). Until two years ago when I set up my dedicated server, I had been sharing the same two printers (similar models - different machines) with one hooked directly to the network via ethernet and the other via a desktop machine. Admittedly, I have a moderate amount of linux experience and with these two printers.

I will say that a recent as two years ago it was a lot harder than today and back when I used PCLinuxOS, it was harder still.

I have not used samba in a very long time, as all of my computers on my network are *buntu. But when I did use it, I discovered it was difficult to get the printers working. I then discovered that windows recognizes ipp. And I used that instead of samba. It was much easier to get everything working that way for me. Maybe samba is easier to set up now than it used to be.

A lot of people have a trouble with samba I think. Mostly because they get far into security aspects of it without the knowledge required and end up locking themselves out.

I went with samba because I also needed file-sharing for my wife and daughters computers.

Call it an outbreak of nearly deadly frustration. My heart stopped when I saw the Cups interface.
I found the setup _much_ easier to do in Mandriva. Having said that, printer sharing setup is one of the very few things that is easier to do in Mdv than in Kubuntu (and maybe that's just because I've been using Mdv for so long)

And, as you say, when you know the technique, it's not hard to do. Detonate's post, combined
with oshgunluvr's were extremely helpful. The first client took me 15 minutes to set up, the second maybe 2 minutes.

What about a short step-by-step How-To, that you'd find immediately when you search for "printer sharing setup"? (Actually, I guess there should be two How-Tos, since there must be one for Samba as well).

I think the best thing about using the CUPS interface to do this is, that it works regardless of your distribution or desktop choice. I may just take your suggestion and write a how-to that covers linux to linux printer sharing. I will include screen shots. Somebody else can do the samba how-to. Give me a couple of days. I'm busy with tax season now and I have to keep all of the computers (16) being used by the volunteer agency I support that does free tax preparation and e-filing for folks.

The next time I do an install, I'll note what I go through. Unfortunately, I usually go right to the text editor and do it manually (quicker for me). See below

As far as CUPS goes; I recently upgraded my 10.04 desktop to kde 4.5 and I did notice the Printer setup in System Settings was rather complete looking. I had already set mine up using the browser interface so I'm unsure of what it looks like when sing a fresh install.

Any noobs out there have any experience to share?
