(SOLVED) Tried basics but Kubuntu is still slow!

    Ref: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...26198#msg26198

I have the same problem too. Working with kubuntu 10.10 installed from the live cd option I really prefer KDE.

My laptop is a MSI 340x, all working with intel components, see for specs:
    http://www.msimobile.com/level3_prod...x?cid=4&id=168

For example, I have downloaded Tengen the go game. At times it freezes completely or get so slow. It happens also that gnucat (or the mozilla equivalent) freezes completely.

The same program on ubuntu work very fine. The response of the computer is fast on my son's Dell laptop.

I have found a few other threads relating slowness or sluggishness of kubuntu:
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3114079.0
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3112854.0
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3103501.0

but with no reaction at all. Any help appreciated.

Edited to add other thread on slowness, etc.

Well, Tengen isn't a game that is in any of the official *buntu repositories, so that means that you installed it from some website or download. You can't expect an unsupported game (or any application) to run correctly, if at all. Gnucat - what is that? A Google search on 'linux gnucat' finds nothing.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

The same ubuntu 10.10 installation on a hp pavilion laptop 1540ca, see specs:
      http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...roduct=1838153

does not present a slow time response or freezing of the web browser, that is firefox. Sorry for using gnucat, I meant icecat, but this is on the zenwalk distribution. I will try to be a lot more concise on the next intervention. Tengen the go game works very fine, fast, etc.

Could it be some kind of memory wrong setting? The MSI is a lot more recent and performing computer.

In the following thread on the topic of slowness or freezing of kubuntu:

Here is the output, in the hope that someone can interpret that one, firefox opened, tengen closed. Because the computer was slow and firefox frooze, I xkilled firefox and closed tengen. Reopening firefox and then tengen, everything runs OK. Bizarre!:

There's the problem -- 93+% of your CPU resources are being sucked up right there.

What is gnash doing -- are you watching flash videos? Or is that part of how your game works?

Thanks dibl for your constructive comment.

I have smplayer and kino, but both do not show gnash in their dependencies. It must be something else.

What would be the apt- command to remove the faulty package?
