    What is PowerDevil?

What exactly does PowerDevil do and how can I control it? With Google I found out that it's a lightweight power management tool, but that doesn't help much. I found lots of information on how to install it, but no clear statement of just what it does. Power Management in System Settings has a choice to activate it or not, but I can't find any information that would help me make that choice intelligently.

    Re: What is PowerDevil?

powerdevil controls various power saving features such as cpu speed (if the cpu supports it), screen brightness, when to hibernate and/or suspend and the like based on battery state, whether power comes from battery or is plugged in and the like .

It also has editable profiles that you can choose to use manually, by power source or intended useage. Powersave, extreme powersave, performance, Presentation are some of the profiles already included.

Some examples: I am running my laptop on wall power, sit it automatically runs with the Performance profile. My screen is full brightness, cpu runs at its full 2.0 ghz (whee! )

I unplug and run off battery, the laptop drops down to 1.2 ghz (ugh ), the screen dims a little, it will suspend if idle for X amount of time or I close the lid. It will also notify me when the battery reaches certain level and either suspend or hibernate depending on the amout of charge left. All these aspects are configurable.

      Clarity needed in Power Management

I understand now (correct me if I'm wrong): Power Management controls Power Devil. The checkbox gives the impression that there's some other entity out there named Power Devil. A line of text in the Power Management screen noting that what this screen controls is called Power Devil would eliminate much confusion. It would also be very helpful to have some words in the Help about the effect of checking or unchecking the box.

I gather that Power Management controls many but not all aspects of Power Devil's behavior. For the others, it's necessary to edit config files -- right?

Power Mangement is just the label given to Powerdevil in System Settings

There shouldn't be any need to edit any config files, everything is in the gui.

You should see what the images in my first link show when you go to Power Management :
