I was running Kubuntu 10.04 with KDE 4.5.1 and was having no problems with compositing in kwin, even the infamous blur effect was working flawlessly (I'd even noticed the bilinear texture filter had become fast enough to use). Something happened that was fixed by clearing ~/.kde/config and I decided that, since I was going to be reconfiguring KDE anyway, I'd take the opportunity to upgrade to Kubuntu 10.10 and KDE 4.5.2. I did a "fresh" install of 10.10 (I kept my home directory intact, except for deleting ~/.kde/config). The first thing I did was to check for new updates, which brought me up to KDE 4.5.2.
After this, popups would often not draw anything on the screen but would otherwise "work". For example, if I clicked the application launcher, nothing would appear on the screen but, if I clicked where an application would be listed, that application would start. Menus behaved similarly, so it's not just plasmoids. If blur is enabled, there will be a blurred region where the popup would normally appear.
I'm running on an ASUS eeepc 1000he with an Intel 945GME. I noticed some comments of a KDE blacklist, but it sounds like that would've been an issue back when I upgraded to KDE 4.5.0 under 10.04. Also, it doesn't seem to be blur related. If I disable all effects the problem occurs less often but is still there.
The only other place I've seen this issue mentioned was at forum.kde.org (where I also asked for help): http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=111&t=90073
Also, I don't know if it's helpful, but this and another issue with Kate (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=249772) only appeared, for me, in 10.10, but may have been an older issue for Gentoo users, since both the forum.kde.org thread and the Kate bug report appear to be from Gentoo users.
