Nvidia Cards model 8xxx are not supported?

Okay i've been messing around and asking to the people about this topic and i've to the conclusion that in this new distro 10.10 the nvidia drvers for the 8xxx models are not supported, although i've seen that they work nicely smooth on my 10.4 LTS. So just wanted to know when this topic is going to be resolved, so i can update as soon as possible to the new Maverick Meerkat 10.10, Thanks for you're support and time.

    Cheers Kira.

According top this site, your card should be supported by the latest version of the Nvidia driver.
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-d...12-driver.html

To install the latest driver activate this repository.
    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu maverick main
    deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu maverick main
    Code:
     sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings

I feel your pain. I have three systems here with Nvidia GeForce 8xxx video cards and get nothing but a sleeping monitor at boot with 10.10. Nvidia GeForce 6xxx cards are not a problem. Same deal....worked fine with 10.04 and even through the 10.10 RC, but a no-go on the final release. I had to move to Debian Squeeze.

                Cheers,

Did you guys try installing the downloaded Nvidia driver (after doing the nouveau removal kabuki dance, of course)? The newest 120.xxx driver should run an 8xxx series card.

Haven't tried that yet, dibi. When I get some time, I'll give it a go.

                    Thanks,

Enlighten me, please. Does this have something to do with blacklisting the noveau driver?

Yes, the nouveau driver has to be (a) removed, (b) blacklisted, and sometimes (c) expelled via an update of the initramfs. Here's the guide that I wrote: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3107406.0

I wish it were a little "smoother" in sequence, but there are so many possible starting configurations that it's hard to do any better in a "fits 'em all" guide. Ask if it's not understandable.

Maybe that will get these guys working with the 8xxx cards. Simply install from the repository I listed above worked for me with my Gforce 9500. I did not have to remove or blacklist nouvea.

Re: Nvidia Cards model 8xxx are not supported?

Well, in my case, I'm not so much concerned about my own systems. The problem is that being retired and a nice guy with time, I maintain probably 20 or so other computers, belonging to very "non technical" users. Over time, I've switched them to Linux....always Kubuntu because it was so easy and to standard Nvidia graphics, Atheros wireless, etc., which has worked so well. It all kept my maintenance chores to a minimum.

Now, with this insistent nouveau driver deal, it's become a major headache. I'm starting to get calls after these people perform updates and reboot, only to find they are back at a terminal prompt or have sleeping monitors. That causes me a lot of work beyond my own 5 computers here in the house.

So, for now, at least, I'm going to be moving them over to Debian and cut down on my "headache factor." It's just sad that everything worked so well before, when the nouveau driver didn't insist on taking control.

                              Cheers,
