Is NVIDIA 260 driver too new?

    I'm pretty frustrated:

Went through some instructions for 10.04 and I am still getting the preinstall script error with 260.12 proprietary drivers. Is this too new and should I just stick with v256?

I already did the instructions found here :

I need 256 for CUDA Drivers 3.0 to work.. Thank you.

I don't believe there is a "too new" issue with 260.19.12.

What "preinstall script error" are you seeing? Did you install the linux-headers-`uname -r` and build-essential packages? Are you shutting down KDM before you run the installer?

EDIT: Do you mean this? I just blow by that message, and have no issues finishing the installation. But, I see some potential workarounds in that Launchpad thread, if you want to try them.

Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and decided to use the included script in the menu system for installing the <Current> driver. It is exactly the driver number I needed..! I wish I had known the <Current> driver's actual number.

For reference I did see that link you posted, but didn't know where the log they talk about is located /var/log/nvidia--? I've since gotten up and running with the proprietary driver and CUDA 3.1 . I've decided to stay away from the 3.2 RC since I am so new to the language it's pointless to get stuck on versions with no advantages to me.

      Thanks again,

Hmm looks like I've run into another problem... when I install the driver through this mechanism.. CUDA is corrupted. They state you should go through the NVIDIA download only: I guess I need to start all over again..

Re: Is NVIDIA 260 driver too new?

I have 260.19.12 installed and it is working perfectly with my GeForce 9500 GT.

I installed it from this ppa.

          https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat...ilter=maverick

The install was done with no problems or errors.

          Code:
          sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
          sudo apt-get update
          sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings

The driver works AND you can run the CUDA GPU SDK samples with no corruption?

I don't know how to test CUDA, how do I do that?
