My system is 64 bit capable but I've always gone with the 32 bit version. One of my concerns is I sometimes install programs from .deb packages. Would I need to be concerned with searching for a 64 bit version?

Back during Jaunty and before, perhaps. Not any more.
I've been running 64bit since Jaunty and am currently using Lucid Lynx, 10.04. I haven't had a single problem with any app that I've installed from the repository, nor with any 64bit deb packages I've installed from outside but verified sources.

Yup. There are a bunch of files in /lib32 and /usr/lib32 which supply 32bit runtime libraries which allow compatibility with 32 bit programs.

In some cases, the answer is still "yes", for example with VMware Player and Skype. Also, I found I needed nvidia-glx-ia32 to get googleearth to show correctly with my Nvidia driver (this is Debian / KDE -- I'm not sure Kubuntu has the same issue).Originally posted by ICMike

Dibl, when I was using Jaunty I had to pre-load 32bit libraries for both Skype and GoogleEarth, but with Lucid Lynx on the same hardware I have not. In fact, I can't find any 32bit apps on my system that require a pre-load to run. I don't pay any attention to the architecture of an app any more. The pre-load necessity seems related to specific hardware and not a general requirement. As I wrote previously, YMMV, but the 64bit OS is an improvement in performance that is worth trying.
Anyway, Installing the 64bit OS and then the programs you want & need is the route to take.
