    gparted/parted bug!

    I think I'v encountered a bug in parted ...........

    I have a new 4Gig USB (duracell)stick ............when I plug it in it's accessible through dolphin and I can right to it just fine......BUT if I try to fire up gparted or parted thay crash if it's pluged in.

    if not pluged in thay both will run...........but pluging in the 4Gig (duracell) USB stick and refreshing the device list will crash both.

    my other USB sticks 2Gig and less don't do this...........in other words no crash if the other sticks are in or out or plugged in and devices refreshed.

    this is the error reported by parted

    1: parted() [0x804c3f1]

    I found a bug report on launchpad about it but couldn't log in and add a confirm for some reason....probably to much free beer and a password prob,

    OK added my 2 cents to the bug report.

    I think I'll try my Gparted livecd and if it dose not crash repartition and format it(the 4Gig USB stick) and see if it happens again.

    I see difrences in it's readout in fdisk from a diferent FAT32 partition on my sys
    /dev/sdb2 1 569 4570461 b W95 FAT32
    A hard drive partition and
    /dev/sdg1 3 2191 3938368 c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
    the USB stick in question that's causing the crashes

      I'm going to suggest/guess that it isn't a GParted 'bug', but that on your USB stick, the partition doesn't start on cylinder 1. My formated 1GB USB stick, which has Knoppix installed to it, shows as follows with sudo fdisk -l:
      Code:
      Disk /dev/sdc: 1009 MB, 1009254400 bytes
      32 heads, 61 sectors/track, 1009 cylinders
      Units = cylinders of 1952 * 512 = 999424 bytes
      Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
      I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
      Disk identifier: 0x68a513a9

        Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
      /dev/sdc1  *      1    1009   984753+  c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
      So I'd be asking the question: "Why does your formated USB stick start on cyliner 3 and not 1?"

        AAaa @Snowhog those were my thought's exactly............but you see this is a brand new stick just unwrapped and that's (it's partition starting at 3) precisely why I'm going to try repartitioning it.

        next post .............the results!

          Brand new? Did this USB stick come with an audiobook on it? (Google finds that this stick comes with such on it per some sites)

          I'd use fdisk to remove the existing partition, and then establish a new one and format it. Then use GParted again. I think that will do the trick.

            Re: gparted/parted bug!

            that was apparently the problem ............fdisk -l with brand new stick

            /dev/sdg1 3 2191 3938368 c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
            and now after fixing with the Gparted livecd ...... Gparted-0.3.1 GNU-parted-1.7.1

            /dev/sdg1 1 490 3935893+ b W95 FAT32
            nether Gparted runing in Kubuntu 10.04 LTS or parted is crashing with the stick in and will work with it.

            now that leaves 2 questions......

            1- why dose a brand new stick come partitioned like that ?

            2- why didn't the livecd version crash ?

            @Snowhog he he got that one in wile I was typing/spell checking.................NO it was brand new with nothing on it just bought from Kerr drug .........witch was one of the reasons I was surprised
