    Re: Cannot access Desktop Activities

It is; not to worry. I still have the initial problem about right-clicking on the desktop and trying to get into Desktop Activity. I'm wondering whether upgrading from KDE 4.4.2 to 4.5 would do anything, but my better angels say I should wait to do that until I have the new video card installed and working. Besides, I've read some mixed reviews about KDE 4.5. Any thoughts?

Did you first click the Cashew, and "unlock" widgets, before you tried right-click the desktop? It's like a secret handshake thing.

I can now get access to Desktop Activity through the cashew, but still not from the desktop itself. Close enough for government work; I was able to do what I wanted to do. Thanks to all.

          Re: Cannot access Desktop Activities

The bottom line on all of this is that my boot drive was malfunctioning, but only intermittently. (Murphy's Law takes no vacations.) I reinstalled Lucid on the other hard drive, and I'm up and running for several days now. My remaining task is to see whether it's just the boot sector that's corrupted or whether the entire drive has died. I'm going to put it in a usb enclosure and see whether Dolphin is able to read it at all.
Fortunately, there were no critical data on that drive that were not backed up in at least two other places. Renewed thanks to all for the patient help.

If you want to give that drive a last chance, you could dd it:

            Code:
            sudo dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sdX bs=1 count=512
make sure X is the correct device for the bad boy drive, and not a good drive!

That will nuke everything including the partition table. Then you boot a Parted Magic or GParted Live CD, and use that to make a new MS-DOS partition table, and then you can partition and format it. Then you could start downloading videos on it or something that isn't critical, and see if it can take some big file-moving tasks without breaking.

Or, you could boot a Hiren's Boot CD or Ultimate Boot CD, and start the surface test.
