No video and missing top menu bar

I am using an acer 751h netbook with an Intel chipset. I have my screen resolution configured ok but some apps like VLC, Amarok are missing the top menu bar where I get to 'X' close, minimise etc the app. I have tinkered with everything but cannot get it to appear. When I place my cursor over the 'invisible' X, the app closes but I cannot see the X.
VLC will not play video either. I can hear the audio from my films but get no video.

Those icons on the top title bar are called "Decorations". Try changing your Windows decorations theme in System Settings.

The VLC issue sounds like a codec (install kubuntu-restricted-extras) or video driver issue.
