    Re: ATI Driver error

the ppa you are using patches the fglrx for real-time kernels, and I am guessing your kernel is not an RT kernel. The fglrx installer has to rebuild certain kernel builds, and as the package you are installing is for RT kernels, it cannot find the needed bits to build them.

this repo may be a better choice as it is maintained by Ubuntu xorg people:

I see that now thank you.

I added the repository but apt-get keeps trying to upgrade to the rt one.......how can I get that to stop?
      Thanks

            Re: ATI Driver error

good you got to a useful desktop finally

If you are not using fglrx, then you are using the open-source ati driver. Ati driver can work extremely well for some things in wine, but not often for some games.

I think perhaps think your driver problems were causing the wine error, as well as the obvious ones you saw with vlc, etc.

I suggest keeping with the open driver if you have things working well for what you need. My desktop (a quasi media center pc connected only to my TV) has a builtin 3200 hd card, that works fine mostly, but I get enough of a boost using fglrx that my Boxee runs better, as well as some Steam games.
