systemsettings empty window

After a failed attempt to upgrade to 4.5 I returned
the system to 4.4.5 and got most everything back
and working except for systemsettings.

Systemsettings starts with an empty window. If I
start it in konsole I get the following.

So far my search has not turned up any fixes. I deleted systemsettingsrc and reinstalled systemsettings but still empty window.

Any help would be appreciated.

In the console try

sudo dbus-launch systemsettings

if it works, you're in root mode, so don't change any user settings. Open the login manager and see that your user is listed. If so, close out of it.

Now try to launch it normally, from KMenu and also from Alt-F2.

Using 'sudo dbus-launch systemsettings' in konsole
I still got an empty window. Alt-F2 starts run box but
it will not start any programs. Tried systemsettings and
kedit. I'm guessing that means something!! Gives me
something else to search for but will still appreciate
any ideas.

Open a console and type:

sudo apt-get install systemsettings

It seems that when you reverted back to KDE 4.4.5, systemsettings might not have been reinstalled, or not fully installed.

I had already reinstalled systemsettings but did it again for good
measure. No luck. I agree something didn't install when going
back to 4.4.5. Other problems that might be related are krunner
will not launch programs and the Quick Access widget doesn't
display any contents. I have thought about trying to upgrade
to 4.5 again or upgrade to Meerkat. The 10.10 live cd would
boot but only run a minute or two and then freeze so thinking
10.4 might be the last version on this old hardware.

At least everything else seems to work until I have a serious need
for systemsettings.

Any ideas will still be appreciated.

I had this same problem a while back. I think when I checked to make sure systemsettings was the same version of kde I was using, it wasn't. I believe I used Synaptic to remove systemsettings completely using "Mark for complete removal." Then I searched in Synaptic "KDE 4 base" and then checked that all the versions numbers were the same. Sorry, don't remember if there were some wrong ones. I restarted my computer, went to Synaptic again, searched "systemsettings" I saw it was the same version as mine then installed it and all was fine. Don't know if this will help but it did me.
