    aRts

    Hi,

I decided to give it a try with Linux and I installed Kubuntu, now I am struggling.

I wanted to install Kopete 0.12.2 but when I type ./configure I get this message "checking for mcopidl... not found" now I know that it is some part of aRts, or? Please tell me what file I need to download.

In this /configure process I had, at least 10 errors like this and i solved them but this one... I even f*cked up whole desktop interface with random updates and packages and did linux recovery.

    Thanks

First, I'll assume that you are running Kubuntu 10.4, Lucid Lynx.
Second, I'll assume that you downloaded the source and are trying to compile Kopete.
Third, I'll assume that you feel you are knowledgeable enough with programming to attempt to install an app by compiling it.

Kopete is in the repository. Do the following. Open a Konsole and enter:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install synaptic

    Then, either
    sudo apt-get install kopete
or, using synaptic, which is a package manager (avoid KPackageKit), enter "kopete" in its search box. You will see Kopete listed. Left click on the little square box in front of its name and select "Mark for installation". Click the green "Apply" icon in the tool bar and proceed with the installation of Kopete.

Kubuntu isn't installed with software development capabilities because most users do NOT compile software when they use Kubuntu. IF you are a developer then use synaptic to install the gcc compiler and the build-essential package. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and delete that Kopete source code you downloaded and stick with the repository apps.

Or if you want a simple package manager that was the default in Kubuntu up to 9.04, then install Adept. Still using it, Adept is the best IMHO

aRts was the soundsystem used in KDE 3. Since KDE 4 (Kubuntu 8.10 and higher), Phonon is the default.
