Kontact hangs when I try to compose a new message

What's going on there, the message composer just hangs and i cant' type anymore, always need to kill Kontact after that... Very annoying! Using version 4.4.2 - Anyone experiencing the same? I found a bug report about that but it apparently had been resolved at 4.4.0 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=198234

    Thanks for help!

Seriously consider upgrading to KDE 4.5.1.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

It doesn't wanna update, I get following message: The following packages block the update: kde-devel libqt4-multimedia plasmoid-weather plasma-widget-weather kdebase-workspace-dev kdebase-workspace-libs4+5 after I confirm the dialog thats shows the additional package changes that are required... hows can i unblock these packages?

First, you have to have the kubuntu-ppa/backports repository. After it is added (assuming it isn't, as you are running KDE 4.4.2), then in a console type:
          Code:
          sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Be prepared for a butt-load of packages to download and install.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Had added the backports repo already, it's updating now. Thanks... why would the KPackageKit block the update of a few packages but if I do it on the console it seems to go through just fine... What is that all about?

            Thanks,

Because KPackagekit SUCKS! Really, it sucks as a 'useful' package manager.

What KPackagekit does not do, is handle package dependencies. That's why it is useless for 'dist-upgrades.'

Alright, that's a good reason, yep...usually not using it either...

Uhm okay, it completed with some error, i redid it and it told me to do an apt-get install -f to fix things. Did that and before rebooting i just wanted to do another sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade it's doing that now, updating a whole bunch of other packets... hmm, let's see how that's gonna end up... interesting...

The apt-get install -f | apt-get update | apt-get dist-upgrade 'loop' is often necessary when doing an multi-step upgrade, in this case, from KDE 4.4.2 to KDE 4.5.1. But that's okay, you repeat until no more errors/warnings are encountered.

Okay, well i eventually tried killall -w dpkg and killall -w apt-get to do the update/upgrade again a few times, and eventually i was like: Okay, reboot NOW.
And of course, my KDE isnt coming up anymore... doing the update/upgrade on the console again but naw, nothing. When kdm is starting i get a lil dialot msg that says unable to launch /usr/bin/startkde file not found and fair enough an /usr/bin doesn't contain a binary startkde... What happened here and how do I get it going again?
                        Thank you tons!
