    Installing gimp-2.7.2 -- gegl won't compile

    Title says it all.
I want to install it along with, not over the top of, gimp-2.6, so I can't use the repository.
    Using the instructions here: http://www.gimpusers.com/news/2009-1...u-904-910.html

But gegl will not compile. See attached file.

    Anyone have this working?

I think you are aware of the frickelplatz repo for debian packages. This is on my aptosid system:

    Code:
    don@sidbox:~$ apt-cache policy gimp
    gimp:
     Installed: 2.7.2~git20100807
     Candidate: 2.7.2~git20100807
     Version table:
     *** 2.7.2~git20100807 0
        500 [url]http://frickelplatz.de/debian/[/url] sid/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
       2.6.10-1 0
        500 [url]http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/[/url] unstable/main amd64 Packages
    don@sidbox:~$ apt-cache policy gegl
    gegl:
     Installed: (none)
     Candidate: 0.1.3-1
     Version table:
       0.1.3-1 0
        500 [url]http://frickelplatz.de/debian/[/url] sid/main amd64 Packages
       0.0.22-2+b1 0
        500 [url]http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/[/url] unstable/main amd64 Packages
I don't know whether it would install on *buntu correctly or not. I have, once or twice, done such experiments on Kubuntu (ekiga comes to mind), with no ill effects, but ..... YMMV.

      Re: Installing gimp-2.7.2 -- gegl won't compile

The problem is that it will overwrite the gimp-2.6 files, and I don't want to break gimp-2.6.
Hence the need to compile with --prefix=/opt/gimp-2.7
There is, by the way, and ubunto ppa for 2.7 also:
      #sudo add-apt-repository ppa:matthaeus123/mrw-gimp-svn
but same problem. Either way, it will overwrite /usr/lib/gimp, breaking gimp-2.6

I suppose there is the dpkg -i --instdir option, but I've never used it, and am a little nervous about it. Any experience there?

        Re: Installing gimp-2.7.2 -- gegl won't compile

I've installed many .deb packages with dpkg, but I never tried installing two versions of the same package on the same system. I'm sure it's possible (for a guru .....).

I think if it were important to me, I'd set it up on a VM. You'll take a little hit on the video performance, of course, but depending on what you need the gimp version for, you should be able to test it and use it that way. The new VMware is able to build a VM from an ISO file -- I set up my Kubuntu 10.10 VM in about 30 minutes.

Why don't you simply install Gimp 2.7 from the repository above, see if you like it, and if you don't, roll back to 2.6 again? That's what I did.

From my testing I can say that Gimp 2.7 runs absolutely stable, it never crashed a single time. However, what seriously pissed me off, the longer I was using it, was the braindead forced xcf saving > > >
You can't save in any format other than that freaky xcf anymore using Save or Save As. For any other formats, you must use the Export option. If you've then "exported" your image in a sane format then and want to close it, a dialog is pestering you:

While I finally found an option in the configuration dialog that supposedly should turn that annoying dialog off, it doesn't work properly. Even then, you wouldn't be warned anymore if you're about to close an image which has unsaved changes, possibly losing a lot of work - certainly not a good idea. So if you want to use the "unsaved changes" check, you must use that xcf crap >

As Gimp 2.7 imo doesn't have any really noteworthy improvements over 2.6 and at the same time annoys the living daylights out of its users with that deranged xcf nonsense, I went back to 2.6 again. I certainly won't touch 2.7 (or a later version) anymore until they have a proper Save dialog again.

@Yuri: No noteworthy improvements? What do you think of the option to have all the tools in 1 single window then? That IS a noteworthy and certainly an improvement

I haven't messed with it enough, but I understand that it allows the user to group brushes and fonts. With hundreds of brushes and thousands of fonts (don't ask...) that would be very helpful indeed. I almost always work in xcf until I am finished, and only save in jpg or png at the last moment, so it's not that big a bother.

I guess what I will do is work with it on aptosid until 2.8 is released. I was under the impression that 2.7 could be installed along with 2.6, but 2.7 wants to drag in a lot of other stuff, that may not be wise for a system I want to keep in relatively stable condition. I haven't tried doing it on Maverick yet, that'll be the next experiment.

I cannot disagree -- the switch to "mandatory" use of .xcf format is an annoyance. I see no reason why "Save As" cannot include the "export to some other format" function.

However, as a person with old .pdd and .psd images going back 15 years or more, I've become very pragmatic about this type of issue, having started out with Adobe scanning software for Windows, then Paintshop Pro for some years before I made the switch to Linux for such work. I use gimp for cleaning, cropping, and resizing photos and other images, mainly for archival and web presentation purposes. If you want your images to be usable in 10 or 20 or 30 years or more, it's best to save the original in a .tiff file anyway, so it doesn't get processed via compression, and isn't subject to changing vendor standards and such. Although it is unfortunately not an ISO or ANSI standard, and although Adobe holds the copyright, TIFF is as close as we have to a vendor-neutral standardized image format, that has a chance to be viable long into the future.

I'll speculate that gimp's switch to .xcf format has some legal concern or threat behind it, and if that hunch is correct then I sympathize with their situation and I'll continue to support and use their package.

                Today's two cents worth .....

I have to agree save as is much preferable to export and I similarly reverted. As for the new brushes it was awkward and clumsy to manage last time I tried it.

Nope, it won't install correctly from frickelplatz, even on 10.10. For fun, after I set up the repo, and ran
                    Code:
                    apt-get update
                    , I tried it:

                    Code:
don@meerkat:~$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall gimp
                    Reading package lists... Done

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
                     gimp : Depends: libjpeg62 (>= 6b1) but 6b-16.1 is to be installed
Depends: libpoppler-glib4 (>= 0.12) but it is not installable
                    E: Broken packages
So, I think you either run it on aptosid, or you wait.

That's because 6b-16.1 is older than 6b1. Had the same problem here too, so I just headed over to packages.debian.org and fetched the newer 6b1.

Did that also resolve the libpoppler-glib4 problem? It looks like apt-get didn't see it in any of the repos that I have set.

Pulling in the two .deb packages from debian.org appeared to result in a successful installation process, via dpkg:

                            Code:
                            don@meerkat:/tmp$ apt-cache policy gimp

                             Candidate: 0.1.3-1

                            However, gimp 2.7.2 wasn't happy:

                            Code:
                            don@meerkat:~$ gimp
gimp: error while loading shared libraries: libgegl-0.1.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I found a later version of libgegl-0.0 in frickelplatz and fixed that one, followed by a problem with libraw1, which I fixed, and now I'm seeing:

                            Code:
                            don@meerkat:/tmp$ gimp
gimp: error while loading shared libraries: libbabl-0.1.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I'd forgotten what it's like to spend the afternoon chasing dependency issues ....

I vote for waiting ... or running it on aptosid.
