Kubuntu on USB memory key -- how to save files

I used usb-creator-kde to write a Kubuntu iso to a USB memory key following the instructions at

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...n/FromUSBStick

After a bit of searching in my boot menu, I found the device and it booted the "live" version fine. To see what would happen, I wrote a file to the home of user "ubuntu". When I went to re-boot the same system, it was found to be invalid.

To me, the interest in such a thing is to take my system and files with me. So what do I have to do in order to be able to save my files to the stick?

I'm guessing I have to create another partition for /home.

    Thanks in advance.

I think you might be looking for "Persistence", which allows you to use the USB stick as though is were a hard drive. The instructions you followed were for "Installation from USB...".

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent

If you want to give file access to windows machines from the same stick, I recommend using an 8GB stick, partition it in half, install kubuntu to one partition and format the second partition as vfat.

Then you can boot to it, install from it, install using wubi, copy files to and from both linux and windows machines - truly an all purpose device!

Persistence sounds good. Thanks for the tip.

However, that (those) method(s) are a good deal more complicated than usb-creator. I'll have to study them some. I wonder if I can assume they will work for Lucid.

It looks pretty easy to do with Windows, but ... what a shame. Do you have a recommended method, given what I want to do?

      Thanks again.

I used the software and instructions on http://www.pendrivelinux.com/linux-live-usb-creator/ to do my 8gb thumb drive like I suggested. I partitioned it first, then did the install and selected Persistence option. Works great! There's a windows version too that works perfectly.

If you're buying a new usb stick for this - go some research and get the fastest stick you can afford. I opted for the Patriot XporterXT 8gb. There are a couple faster but the price went too high at the time. It's encased in rubber too, which I like - just bounces if you drop it!

Sorry! Didn't mean to repeat. Didn't read your post closely enough. :P

I'm confused. Does Linux Live USB Creator run under Linux or under Windows? Looks like Windows.

Actually, that is a Windows application also. I was wondering about a version which runs under Linux. Hm, wonder if it will run under Win/XP in VMware. Doesn't matter. I have a dual-boot with Win7 too.

Geeze your right - I just remembered when I did mine I was at work on my windows machine!

The one you're looking for is called usb-creator-common and usb-creator-kde from the repos.

Re: Kubuntu on USB memory key -- how to save files

Unfortunately, the doc for usb-creator is quite summary. No explanation of how to use persistent mode. Indeed, it looks like the default. But I made a key that way, as already explained, and writing to it made it unusable. There is the possibility to have documents and settings "stored in reserved extra space", but no mention of how to use it once the key is booted.

There is a Linux version for Fedora at

                          https://fedorahosted.org/liveusb-creator/

which is supposed to work on Windows and Fedora. Any chance it might work on Kubuntu? I don't even know whether Fedora is based on Debian or not.
