Could this be related to localization? But, on the other hand, localization is included for the other users also, yet kde starts normally.

In the file listing, for a working KDE login there should be this file:

-rw------- 1 dibl dibl     0 Sep 23 06:24 .ICEauthority

But you don't have it. I'm not sure what the implications are, but I suspect it's a bad thing.

I had requested a listing for /home/, not /home/nenad/, because I wanted to see the permissions on the users' home folders. Can you do that, please?

Eureka!

I read somewhere that .ICEautority gets messed up with ownership or permissions sometimes.

I was tinkering around in bash and at one point I ran dcop to see what it returns.

I tried to run kate, but it and all the other kde apps reported "Bus error". When I tried to run it with sudo, I got the message that

Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-nenad" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.

So I deleted all the kde cache, restarted X and here I am, logged in KDE

I'll mark the topic as [resolved] but I'd still like to hear how do you people perceive what has actually happened here. Thank you all for the hints and ideas, in the end it was dibl's input about .ICEauthority that made me look a bit closer...

Man, it's a good feeling to solve a problem like this... Although I'm not 100% on what the problem was

If you list your user's home directory now, I think you'll find the .ICEauthority file there. It's hard to say exactly what happened, but I've experienced the same problem after (a) running (as root) the installer for downloaded software in my user's home folder, and (b) sudo'ing GUI packages from my user's home prompt, when I should have used Alt-F2 "kdesudo" instead.

I installed playdeb's deb file in terminal via ssh, but that shouldn't be it. I'm trying to backtrack, but I have no idea what I could have done...

I must remember to use kdesudo!

I don't know what is "Ђанишемо" but I assume that is something like "Smell ya later" And I appreciate you giving Serbian a try

Playdeb is safe. Used it here before and didn't have any problems.
The problem may lie in the use of sudo instead of kdesudo. Had that problem also once. Used sudo for GUI things and then I had the same as you. Fixed .ICEauthority and then it worked again. So I think the problems lies there.

That makes sense, except I don't remember opening any gui-based apps using sudo. Weird stuff.

Talking about kdecache folder, it once messed up my kdm background image. It was a few KDE releases ago. After upgrading, the background image was from the previous version of KDE, so I had to delete all cache so it could start displaying the right background.

Perhaps there should be some deamon/script/whatever to purge that cache automatically from time to time...
