Can't install Firefox on Kubuntu 10.04

    Hi all,

I'm on Kubuntu 10.04 and I am trying to install Firefox but am having a problem. I am new to Linux so I am not sure what this means. Am I missing some package?

    $ sudo apt-get install firefox
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
firefox: Depends: libstartup-notification0 (>= 0.10) but it is not installable
Recommends: ubufox but it is not installable
    E: Broken packages

You can add this repository for Firefox, then try again:
      https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozill...y/+archive/ppa

Don't use the Firefox installer, it doesn't work very well.

Thanks for the replies. When I try that, it tells me that the connection is refused. I am using a proxy server and have Konqueror configured to use it (hence how I am on now). Do I need to do something similar here? And once this is installed, how would I install Firefox, just 'sudo apt-get install firefox'?

        $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa

          Strange... install Synaptic:
          sudo apt-get install synaptic

Then go to Settings > Repositories and add the repository on the "Other" tab. After that, reload using the "Reload" button, then simply enter firefox in the search box and install the package named "firefox" from the list.

When I try that command, I get the following error:

            Reading package lists... Done
            Building dependency tree
            Reading state information... Done
Package synaptic is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package synaptic has no installation candidate

Did you build your cache before you ran the install?
              i.e. - sudo apt-get update

The proxy is definitely the issue here as apt does not necessarily follow what KDE's proxy settings are. It explains the errors you are gettting as Apt can't get a fresh list of packages.

Look here for info. There are a number of things you can try, even temporarily to check if it works.

Thanks all for the help. Instead of using packages, I just went to Firefox's website, downloaded the ZIP file, extracted it, and now it works.

I'll look into the proxy issue, as I know one day I will need to use packages.

Is your system getting regular security and bug updates?

Considering the proxy issue, I don't think it is. Is there an easy way to check that?

I've never used a proxy so I am not familiar with them.
