    HP Color LaserJet CP1215

I thought I would share my "problems" and "success" with this printer, which I now have working really well. The point is I do not know whether my problems were generic or associated with my hardware, but having now got it working my experience may be of help to others. (My system is Dual-Core Intel E7400 2.8 GHz with dual 150Gb hard drives, ATI HD 3650 graphics card, 4Gb RAM).

I've been using HP printers for .... too long! and over the recent past have been using DeskJets and All-In-One Printer/Scanner/Copiers. But I have now a need for better quality colour printing and decided to treat myself to a colour laser.

I decided to buy this CP1215 even though it's not formally supported on Linux (but I could use it on my VirtualBox Windows XP system as the Windows printer-driver seemed well developed). The printer is reasonably priced but has expensive replacement toner cartridges. It is recognised by Kubuntu 10.4 in the Printer setup but it does not configure properly and the colour profiles are not quite right. It needs a plugin that would not load.

After a lot of head-scratching (and wasted paper!) and Googling around I found that the problem relates to the need to update the HPLIP files and changing the default Kubuntu foo2zjs file.

Go to the HPLIP site http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html and download the most recent HPLIP file (which opens scripts to install all the necessary files - including the needed plugin). This gives improved results/options in the Printer Settings dialogue.

But the colour profiles are still not quite right - so, you need to change to foo2zjs file. Go to this site http://foo2hp.rkkda.com/ (you can make a contribution if you are happy!) and follow the instructions there for downloading and configuring the new drivers in foo2zjs.

It all worked well for me and now with the updated ICM colour profiles the printer gets the colours correct. So, the good news is - no need to use the VirtualBox XP setup any more!! Hooray!!

Thank you for posting that information! 8)

I've been considering purchasing a color laser too and you've just move that printer to the top of my list!

Also, I am going to sticky this msg because color printers are getting into a reasonable price range and a lot more people are going to be buying them, especially if they use them to print photos. A relative of my wife sent her some pictures of her father's hs graduation and they were printed on a color laser using photo quality shiny paper. They were indistinguishable from a processed photo.

      Hi GreyGeek,
I recently purchases a Canyon Pixma MX870. Canon actually provides drivers for Linux:

and the instructions for quite straightforward:

I had it up and running in about five minutes. Works flawlessly. Sorry, PhilT... I, too, was a long time HP user until this last round. I wanted something that just *worked* with Linux. This Canon has proved to be that and more.

Well, I'm just glad you've got a good working system! I'm still happy with the HP CP1215 - but it did take some fiddling. :P

Woa! Did I feel the ground shake?

Canon printers used to be my favorite brand. In the late 1990's and up until around 2004 or so, Canon printers worked very well with Linux, and they were all I used. Then, their new printers, management and support became hostile to Linux, so I abandon them. Thanks for the heads up about them supporting Linux again.

Last week I bought a lexmark pro705. Lexmark supplies Linux drivers for all their newer printers.

This printer has a 5 year warranty and they also supply tech support for there Linux drivers
