    4.4.5 to 4.5.1 upgrade failed

I enabled the backports repo and applied the updates with synaptic
and the upgrade failed with many dependency errors. It seemed
that libqtcore4 was not the required version along with libqtgui4 and
    libqt4-network. I did this on 9/5. When I couldn't get anything to
make the upgrade play I jerked it back to 4.4.5. Was I too soon and
backports was not fully updated or is there something else on my
end that caused the errors?? Everything is working for me now as
before except I lost a couple of widgets.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

See my Reply #44 to Re: KDE 4.5.0 - upgrade now or wait?. This documents what I did, in the order I did it, to upgrade my testing LL 10.04 from KDE 4.4.5 to KDE 4.5.1 successfully. You'll note, that I did it from the command line.

The actual commands are bolded. Read it through. You'll note, that at one part of the upgrade procedure, there was a reported error. This was fixed with the subsequent commands.

When I was finished, I had a fully working LL 10.04 running KDE 4.5.1.

Thank you for the reply. I will give your method a try
when I get a moment. I did not add "ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa"
first and upgrade from there. I thought I only needed
backports and I expect that will make a difference.

        I misspoke: I did have "kubuntu-ppa/ppa" enabled when I
        enabled "kubuntu-ppa/backports". Wouldn't have thought
there would have been dependency problems. I'll try again
and copy the error message if it fails.

You need to read what I did in that link carefully. I installed a fresh copy of LL 10.04, which meant, KDE 4.4.2, and I had to upgrade KDE to 4.4.5 first, and then again, once KDE 4.4.5 was fully installed, upgrade to KDE 4.5.1. Further down, I noted adding the kubuntu-ppa/backports repository.

Probably he meant "a fresh copy of Kubuntu 9.04", which actually had Kde 4.2.x
              Kubuntu 10.04 has Kde 4.4.2.

I went right from Kde 4.4.2 to Kde 4.5 Beta 2 when it came out and didn't have any dependency problems when upgrading.

Add kubuntu backports ppa and in terminal do a sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

This has to be done via terminal, not via kpackagemanager.
