    4.5.1 kpackagekit wonky

Since upgrading Lucid to 4.5.1 through the backports repos, the software manager (kpackagekit) has not been functioning correctly. If I go to install or remove a package, it will ask for my password. After I enter my password and press enter, it just sits there doing nothing--no progress indicator or anything. If I hit "apply" on the main add/remove software screen again, I get the message:
"The package that is trying to be removed or updated is already installed." (or "not already installed" if I'm trying to remove a package).

    Anybody else experiencing this?

"We" (snobbish, yes, I know) don't like/use KpackageKit - it sucks. It's junk. It should not be the 'default' package manager in Kubuntu.

Do your self a favor and install either the Synaptic or Muon package manager. They are far, far superior to KpackageKit. Both just work.

I think I'll do that. Thanks, snowhog. I already do most of my package manipulation using apt-get, since I have learned that I can't always trust kpackagekit to not botch the install or crash.

Or Adept, Adept is my favorite and was also the default package manager up to 9.04
IMHO: KPK sucks, Adept rules (and Muon too, Synaptic too if you want more than the basics)

I still don't understand why Adept was junked in favour of kpackagekit, it is just a bloody crazy decision.

True, that Kpackagekit junk really shouldn't be the default - it's junk like that which gives Kubuntu a bad reputation (along with the other junk, Knetworkmanager).

If they had any sense in them, they would set Synaptic as the default (Muon wouldn't be a good idea yet, it still has lots of work to be done to be a good replacement).

Why put a GNOME-app like Synaptic as default according to you? Why not put Adept back, which was the default up to 9.04? That is IMO the best package manager on Kubuntu and I'm still using it here on 10.04

Adept Manager, which handles the packages:

Adept even has a Software Centre-like module, called Adept Installer:

                    Re: 4.5.1 kpackagekit wonky

People whined a lot about how much Adept sucked (and how we did by comparison), back in the day. Then KPackageKit came around as the new kid on the block, and people started saying how awesome it was, and how Kubuntu was a bad distro since it didn't use KPackageKit by default.

So we embraced KPackageKit in 9.04. Then people realized it sucked. Then the Adept author quit development since we were the only reason he was developing Adept. Can't exactly ship an unmaintained package manager by default...

It's a mess, yes. But one I hope to solve with Muon.

                      Re: 4.5.1 kpackagekit wonky

@Jon: I never complained about Adept. Sure, Adept can do better, but I still love it in 10.04 and use it only
Muon is a step in the right direction, but still cannot beat the simplicity user-friendly-ness of Adept. But it's waaay better than KPK, you're doing a great job Jon

And btw, sure you can't ship an unmaintained package manager by default, but you can always look for a new developer if you want to ship it as default again

Well, frankly I think Adept still sucks But this is IMO mostly a cosmetic issue. It is simple, fully functional and I still use it (but it seems that this is going to be changed with the Muon Package manager) but it is very ugly looking, probably because it was unlucky to be shipped with the early KDE 4.0 which has a very little UI consistency and polish. I mean, come on, do you really like that default side bar? same thing applies to Okular too. I hate that side bar. It should be replaced with something better, and more KDEish Of course these are purely my personal feelings.

All in all, It still is the most usable package manager for Kubuntu.

                        Regards.

@oblivion: You're kidding, right? Adept in it's current state wasn't shipped with 4.0 Kubuntu 8.04 KDE 4 Remix used the old KDE 3 Adept. The current KDE 4 Adept was developed between KDE 4.0 and 4.1 and was FIRST shipped with Kubuntu 8.10, which had KDE 4.1, so it's not KDE 4.0's fault. The problem lies in the Kubuntu-team droppig Adept which caused the developer not to work on it further. If he was still working on it, than I'm sure things would've been changed. But I do like the sidebar, it's what is makes it so functional
One day, when I know how to program, I'll continue Adept

@Vistaus: Ah yes. It seems that my memory failed me. Thanks for correcting the false information. It should be KDE 4.1
But I still don't like the UI of Adept much. But as I've mentioned, it is nothing objective, It' just doesn't fit into my taste. Yet, I think, had it been developed further it would probably be a synaptic killer.

                            Regards.

                              You're welcome
And memory fails can happen sometimes, I have it too sometimes

The sidebar really is my taste, but it was intuitive in a different way, then that's also fine with me. I don't care much about the order of doing things in a package manager, as long as it's intuitive and user-friendly
But like I said, one day, when I know how to program, I'll continue Adept
