[SOLVED] kopete problem with msn/windows live

New to these forums, kubuntu and kde4 in general

Running a fully updated kubuntu lucid install and generally things are going very well but I have a problem with kopete.

After adding an MSN/Windows Live account it keeps asking for the password over and over again and won't connect.
I have checked and re-checked and there is no typo, I am definitely entering the correct password and I have been unable to connect via the web, empathy and pidgin with the same username and password.

I should point out that I am using a "live.co.uk" account.
I know empathy has trouble with non "msn.x" accounts until telepathy-butterfly is removed but I don't have that package anyway on kubuntu.

I also have an ubuntu+kubuntu maverick testing install and it has the same problem (in fact openSUSE ALSO has the same problem).

I did do a search but all the posts seemed to be pre 2007.

Finally got to the bottom of the problem.
Changed my password (in windows live settings) as I do every so often.
Tried the new password and it worked straight away.

The old password had a mix of letters and numbers, the new one is just letters so it seems kopete has problems sending password with numbers in?

Ran into the same problem a couple hours ago when I created a Kopete jabber account with gmail.com. Had to take my numbers out of my password.

Piss Poor password security implementation there! Won't accept numbers!? Only letters? Can we spell 'dictionary attack' to crack said passwords? :P

That's what I thought, I mostly use numbers in all my password so it was only by chance that I happened not to this time or I would no doubt still be scratching my head on this one (or more likely having to use something else).

It's not a bug about numbers. I use KMess as default, but just tried Kopete to reproduce this a few minutes ago and it logs in correctly with my Windows Live-account. And my password contains letters, numbers and even a special symbol.

              Hmm, dunno.
Tried changing my password 4 times, 2 with numbers 2 with just letters.
Neither of the ones with numbers would work and both the ones without numbers did.

If it makes any difference mine is a live.co.uk account.

Same here, my password also has letters, numbers and special symbols and I never had any problem with it.

Re: [SOLVED] kopete problem with msn/windows live

As I said, I set up Kopete to use gmail.com as the jabber server. Because of that, to log on you have to use your gmail password. BUT, when I was rejected when I used it. When I dropped the numbers from my gmail password Kopete took it. My gmail password wasn't changed.

One other point about Kopete. It has a video icon in the setup panel. My internal webcam is recognized and shows a picture. The webcam setup has controls similar to guvcview. There is one BIG however, however ... the webcam works only with MSN and Yahoo! chats. Bummer. For that reason Kopete won't be replacing Skype or gmail voice & chat for me any time soon.

Yeah, about the webcamming @GreyGeek: it recognizes my webcam fine in the Setup of Kopete. But when I go to a chat window, I don't see any way to make a video call or turn on my webcam. What do I have to do?

I use neither. I just read somewhere that Kopete video was ONLY for MSN and Yahoo!. So, I guess, your milage may vary.

                          Have you tried aMSN?

Yes, but aMSN dropped support in the latest versions because it doesn't work anymore 'till the protocol gets updated. But that requires a rewrite for them.

Wow. That pretty well screws Kopete users hoping to have a video experience.
