In Vlc, go to Tools > Preferences > Audio tab. Choose a different sound system and see if it works.

when you checked your volume mixer did you see a PCM Chanel ?

just checking because it quite often gets set to mute or turned down by some upgrades or installs and over looked by the user.

To further what vinny says - first step is to open the mixer and enable all channels, play around until you figure whats what.

On mine no less than three sliders control the speaker volume and another controls the headphones.

A little more information would be nice to see:

                1. What is your sound hardware?
                Code:
                 lspci
                will show it

                2. Do you hear any sounds (system start sound, other players,)? When you use Dragon Player, which device is it using?

                3. How much of this guidance have you tried to follow? http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449 which is found at #6 here: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3099811.0

                4. When you opened System Settings > Multimedia and looked at the "Device Preference" tab, what did you see? When you highlight a device, and press the "Test" button, what happened? Did you try it for each device?

VLC is just one of dozens of media players, and no one on this forum is a VLC developer. You need to dig into your own system a bit, and get basic sound working reliably, and then we can talk about which audio players are working or not.
