Black screen for 30 sec after the Grub2 menu

Am using lucid, on one partition 32-bit upgraded, on another partition fresh install of 64-bit. Both show the following:

1. Grub2 boot menu
2. A black screen for abt 30 sec
3. A splash screen with the text Kubuntu
under which there are five dots, time 0.1 to 5 sec
4. The KDE 4.4 splash screen (am using autologin) abt 5 sec
5. The plasma desktop

Am using ATI Catalyst and "quiet splash" in grub.cfg. Don't think it is meant to be like this!?

Try this, it fixed the "black screen during boot" issue for me:

Take the highest supported mode listed by hwinfo that isn't higher than your desktop resolution. It most likely won't list 16:9 resolutions, so you'll have to pick a 4:3 resolution. I'm using 1920x1200 as desktop resolution and picked 1600x1200 from the hwinfo list.

Thanks, it worked fine. Just installed v86d and added uvesafb to the grub cmdline (did not bother to change the resolution) in /etc/default/grub, update-grub and the echo FRAMBUFFER thingie and update-initrmfs -u and Voila!
