    "Add to desktop" does nothing

If I right-click on a item on the K menu, one of the choices I get is "add to desktop". But if I click on that, nothing happens. I want to put the icon for the chosen program on the current desktop. How can I do that? And is there a way to add an application to all desktops?

I've chosen "different activity for each desktop" in the system settings, since I want different desktops to have different backgrounds. Is that relevant?

Did you look underneath any existing desktop icons? Did you check the other desktops?

I just checked my desktop and it "save to desktop" put an icon of QCad on it.

It may be that your separate desktop activity does affect that feature.

      No current icons on desktop

I don't have any icons on any of my desktops, and I can't even see how to create one.

That's interesting. With "different activities for each desktop" unchecked, I can get the desktop icons. But I still can't drag from the K menu to the desktop -- nothing happens.

So is there a way that I can have different backgrounds on my desktops but still place application icons on them? I seem to recall that in a different installation of Lucid, I had no such problem.

I thought this interesting too so I've been playing!

For me to get an icon on the desktop from the menu (I use Lancelot) I have to 'unlock widgets'.

For the wallpapers etc. right click on an 'empty' space on your screen to get the options the bottom one being 'desktop settings'. Click on that and away you go.

              Still no success

              Here's what I did:

              1. I went into System Settings / Desktop / Multiple Desktops and (re)checked "Different activity for each desktop".

              2. I right-clicked on a desktop background and brought up a menu with "Lock widgets" as its fifth item, implying that the widgets were unlocked. But to be sure, I locked them and then unlocked them.

              3. I went to the K menu, picked an application, and clicked on "Add to desktop". Nothing visibly happened.

              4. I went back to System Settings / Desktop / Multiple Desktops and unchecked Different Activity. At this point, "Add to desktop" worked. The icon added in Step 3 was also visible.

I also tried using "Desktop settings" in the context menu to change the background color, leaving Different Activity unchecked. It changed the color -- but on all the desktops (no real surprise there).

So to summarize the problem: you can put application icons on a desktop or you can have desktops with different backgrounds -- but not both!

Re: "Add to desktop" does nothing

I'm using KDE 4.5.0 and the Multiple Desktops is not there (on my system at least). However you can place a different wallpaper via 'desktop settings'.

The Lancelot launcher that I use does not offer the option to 'add to desktop' but you can drag the item to the desktop.

I've just added the Kickoff launcher and 'add to desktop' works as does dragging the item to the desktop.

That's puzzling. If you don't have multiple desktops in Systems Settings, are you getting multiple desktops by some other method? Having different wallpapers doesn't make sense if you don't have different desktops. I'm running KDE 4.4.2 on a fully updated Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid system -- does 4.5.0 do things differently?

Re: "Add to desktop" does nothing

There is a 'Window Behaviour' icon under system settings and clicking on that gives you the option to choose the number of 'Virtual Desktops' that you want. The 'multiple desktop' as such is nowhere to be found although I am sure it existed in a previous version of KDE.

Yo - I suppose 4.5.0 does do things slightly differently - they are always fiddling around with something that you have just gotten used to!

On my system currently 'minimising' an app via the minimise button sees the app vanish altogether. It appears you have to minimise by clicking on the pager in the panel. This maybe a bug of course unless anyone knows differently.

[color=navy]EDIT: Sorted that - the 'task manager' widget wasn't obvious it had hidden itself under the panel - silly me!

                      4.5 changes

Out of desperation I upgraded (?) to 4.5.0. Multiple desktops is still there -- in a section of System Settings called "Lost and Found". Its existence has already been reported by several people as a bug.

'Window Behavior" seems to address windows within a desktop, not different desktops. On my system at least, "Window Behavior" has three sections: Navigate through Windows, Windows Behavior, and Window-Specific. None of them have any mention of the number of virtual desktops.

I hope this upgrade was not a huge mistake, considering that 4.5.0 is not part of the official release. It will be very difficult to go back. Speak of the "bleeding edge" ---

Mmmmm - you do have a different set-up to mine. 'Lost and Found'? Not seen that for some time!

I've also noticed that 'activities' isn't doing what it should according to the info available but meanwhile everything else is working fine. Sorry I cannot be of more help perhaps the next batch of updates will sort things out (i.e. put things back to 'normal')

                        Regards.

Re: "Add to desktop" does nothing

hear on Kubuntu 10.04 KDE4.5.0 the # of virtual desktops can be changed in 2 places

1-rite click the pager on the panel and click pager settings.

                          2-system settings>window behavior>virtual desktops.
