    Compositing doesn't work, due to technical issues?

    I also have a topic on the KDE Forums, but maybe it's a Kubuntu-problem, so maybe you guys can help me

    The problem atm starts here:

    So basically the problem atm is:
    When I try go to Desktop Effects, it says "The desktop effects could not be activated due to the following technical issues:"
    and then lists nothing.

    The propretairy Ati-driver is working though and direct rendering is available:
    vistausss@vistausss-laptop:~$ glxinfo | grep -i direc
    direct rendering: Yes
    GL_EXT_copy_buffer, GL_EXT_copy_texture, GL_EXT_direct_state_access,

    What can the problem be?
    Most important laptop specs (this is my main computer, with Kubuntu on it):<br /><br />4096MB RAM (DDR2)<br />500GB Hard Disk<br />ATI Mobility Radeon 4570HD Videocard with 512MB GDDR3 RAM, up to 2280MB VRAM<br />Intel® Core™ 2 Duo-processor T6600<br /><br />OS: Kubuntu 10.10

    i had this issue w/ both the properitary driver and the open source one on my ATI raideon 4830HD , i can't tell you what exactly happened. but it started shortly after installing kde 4.5 rc 1 and i formated the / drive. did a fresh install had the same issue then upgraded to 4.5 and it all works now w/ the open source driver.

      But I don't wanna reinstall the whole thing until 10.10 comes out. Is there any other possibility?

        Simply ignore that nonsensical message, looks like Kwin is falling over its own feet there
        Kwin can be a bit wonky at times. I got that message as well with my 4870 and latest fglrx from July, installed from x-swat repositories. I'm using Compiz and Emerald here, and Compositing works perfectly fine with all effects

        One thing you need to keep in mind when using the fglrx driver is that you need to run the initial configuration utility after installing:

        Open a konsole window and enter sudo stop kdm to stop the graphical desktop and switch to a text-only environment.
        Then enter sudo aticonfig --initial so it sets up a proper Xorg configuration file (Lucid doesn't have one by default).
        After it's done, you can reboot using sudo init 6.

        If Compositing still doesn't work after that, try switching to Compiz. Simply install fusion-icon (system tray app) so you can easily switch from Kwin to Compiz and Emerald.

          I already ran sudo aticonfig --intial and that worked fine.
          I know can switch to Compiz, but KWin is more lightweight than Compiz and also has some effects that Compiz doesn't have, like Blur for example.

            im not saying you have to format, or that it fixed my error.. i don't really think that helped much

              Leaving besides the point that Blur is just plain ugly and no sane person would use that Windows-inspired crap, Compiz has it as well. Compiz Settings Manager, under "Effects", second item in the second row: "Blur Windows". You can precisely select which type of windows should be affected using WindowMatching rules, select between different blur types, and various other settings. KWin can't do that.

              It's rather the other way round. Compiz has a lot more effects than KWin, with much more configuration options.

                  this was manditory when i used to use compiz. but it has been quite a while since then it may not be needed any more

                    No. Actually, you set "Compiz" as window manager. Emerald is the window decorator.
                    Install fusion-icon and lauch it. Then right-click the system tray icon and select "Window manager > Compiz" and "Window decorator > Emerald".
                    fusion-icon also provides quick access to the settings for Compiz and Emerald.

                    Here's a very nice Emerald style I downloaded from Kde-Look some time ago:

                    Open the Emerald Theme Manager (it's also in the fusion-icon right-click menu), click on "Import" and select the .emerald style from where you saved it to.
