Solved - OpenOffice extremely slow in file access

I hope this is the proper place to ask this question.

OpenOffice under Lucid Lynx and the previous version of Kubuntu is extremely slow when accessing files. If I click to open or write a file, it takes about 20 to 30 seconds just for the file listing window to access and list files. Changing directories is faster, but not by much. Opening a file takes 30 to 40 seconds and writing a document to a file can take even longer than that.

It can take up to 3 or 4 minutes to get to the proper directory and open a file or write a document to a file.

I had noticed this behavior under the previous version of Kubuntu also.

    Does anybody observe this behavior?

Is it a known bug in OpenOffice?

    No problems here.

    Kubuntu 10.04 32-bit
    Kernel 2.6.32-24-generic i686 (32 bit)
    OOo version 3.2.0

OOo launches in under five seconds. Opening a file, or navigating directories, takes about one second. Your problem sounds like a configuration issue. Have you tried renaming your ~/.openoffice.org/ folder, say to ~/.openoffice.org_BACK and then relaunching OOo? This will rebuild the hidden configuration folder with default settings.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Startup is 3-4 seconds, files open instantly. This is with the Kde integration package (openoffice.org-kde) installed, which lets you use the Kde file picker.
If you don't have it installed, try installing it.

I have this same problem, and the only way I could fix it was to change it to use openoffice dialogs:
        Tools>Options>Openoffice.org>General>Open/Save dialogs>(checkbox)Use Openoffice.org dialogs

I remember trying to use the native dialogs and installing the package recommended above and it did not help. I have unchecked the box now and then and the problem always returns.

This is in Kubuntu Lucid using KDE4.4.2 and openoffice.org 3.2.0

        Hope this helps.

Re: OpenOffice extremely slow in file access

          Thanks.

          I looked for the folder:

          ~/.openoffice.org

          Found 2:

          ~.openoffice.org

          and

          ~/.openoffice.org2

Renamed both by adding ".orig" to end of both folder names.

          Then booted OpenOffice.

Came up fast. Clicked to open a file - the file dialog came up fast and navigating through the directory structure was fast. Loading an existing document was pretty fast with the time related to the document complexity.

So I guess all of the legacy setting hanging around from previous versions made things kind of unknown to the current version and it had to sort through conflicting directives to decide what to do.

Now I have to figure how the dmaths works. I keep getting the message: "Insufficient data to sum" or something similar depending on which symbol I try.
