[Solved]Kubuntu won't boot after KDE 4.5 update :(

Well not 100% true.
When I switch on my PC it will start..then hang on the plymouth screen, you know, the one with the Kubuntu logo and the dots underneath.
It will stay like that indefinitely or until i press the power button which makes the pc shutdown,all properly too, linux actually shuts down before the PC powers off so it's working to some extent.
I then switch it on again and the system will start up fine and work perfectly.

It's probably something simple that I am overlooking, but I had a look in the logs in /var/logs/ and couldn't see anything, is that even the right place? I've been away from linux a while and was using ubuntu until recently switching back to Kubuntu (I took a while to warm to kde4 :P love it now!) updated to 4.5 last night and this happens?
Any advice would be great

After you selected the proper entry from the boot menu and booting starts with the Plymouth screen, hit Esc so you can see the boot messages.
There you can see where it hangs and what is causing the problem.

Thanks, I've been wondering how to see the boot messages, didn't even think to try esc..doh.
Will try that next time I reboot the pc!

Not sure if this is 'caused by KDE 4.5, since the problem happens before KDE 4.5 loads. It's more likely 'caused by a normal update. And yes, that can happen. Since a normal update a while ago, my Kubuntu-plymouth has turned into the Ubuntu one. And I can't get it back.

So indeed, you should press Esc to see where it fails.

apparently it IS booting..
This morning the same thing happened, but I wasn't at the pc, I'd started it up then gone to make a coffee
When I came back the Kubuntu plymouth screen was still up, so I left it for a few more mins..then hit esc..and the login screen was there.

Perhaps it's just not switching to KDM until I hit esc?
Hard issue to diagnose..I mean was it just coincidental timing that I pressed esc right as the login screen came up or was it truly hidden until I pressed esc? :P
I'll do some more checking in 7 days, away on hols now!

Since a normal update a while ago, my Kubuntu-plymouth has turned into the Ubuntu one. And I can't get it back.

Kubuntu boot screen is in package plymouth-theme-kubuntu-logo. You can (re-)install it to get the Kubuntu boot screen.
(You can also uninstall it if you like the purple Ubuntu boot screen better, like me )

When I search on "plymouth-theme" in Synaptic, I get a choice of 15 packages (13 themes). Only two of which are installed in my fairly standard Kubuntu 10-04 setup. They are "plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text" and "plymouth-theme-kubuntu-logo". Try one or more of the others, if you want some variety.

Well I have been away on holidays for 5 days, and switched on the pc..it booted first time. I can only assume that one of the updates I installed before I went away fixed it. I'll update if it happens again but until then, marking this as solved.
