No sound in none KDE media players

    Hi,

Like the topic says, I have no sound in VLC, XBMC (etc) media applications, for both video and music files. Also the 'start up' tune of KDE is also not working.....

One other thing..when starting up Kubuntu complains that some sound cards are not present...

The strange thing is: Amarok and Dragon Player (KDE apps) are working ok (both video and music).

    **How did it all happen***
I have had some sound issues before, did a reinstall (re-used my home folder) and no sound for the non KDE apps. Therefore I think it has to do something with my settings....only which.. ..

Hope you can help me, its bothering me for some time now, and I cant fix it myself.

    Cheerz

I had a slightly different problem. Amarok worked and I did get the start-up tune but I got no sound inside browsers (flash). I installed pulseaudio, checked the volume levels in the mixer were OK and all channels were un-muted and all the sound works now.

I experienced something similar a long time ago, the good news is that your audio is working fine if you can hear sound in Amarok and Dragon Player. As MikeyOT mentioned, you can probably fix this by enabling some additional audio channels.

I assume you can see the KMix audio icon on your panel? Right-click this and select 'Show Mixer Window' then click the 'Mixer' button, check the volume levels on all the channels (Front, Centre, PCM etc.), you may need to experiment to find out which does what. It would be a good idea to already have something playing in VLC, that way you should immediately hear when you get the right channel.

If this doesn't fix it then switch to System Settings, open Multimedia and check the device settings for Music (this is the one used by Amarok). Make sure all the other Audio Outputs are set with the same device at the top of the list.

      Good luck.

Hi thx for the quick replies...however they did not work.

        - Pulseaudio...I did sudo apt-get install pulseaudio....message: already installed the latest version

        - Enabling some audio channels via KMix
I fiddled some with the mixer buttons, while playing a song in vlc ....no succes

        - Multimedia settings Device setting are all identical and working (verified in with the test button)
        Code:
        The first one is C-Media CMI8770 (C-Media PC DAC/ADC)
Hovering over this device KUbuntu says (Translated from Dutch): "This will use the first device that works:
        1. ALSA: x-phonon: CARD= 3,Dev=0
        2. ALSA: plughw: CARD= 3,Dev=0
        3. OSS: /dev/dsp3
        4. OSS: /dev/audio3
All these setting are identical for audio, video, communication etc.

Go to Systemsettings > Multimedia > Phonon. Check under "Audio Output" and its sub-items that the preferred device is properly selected. "PulseAudio Sound Server" is generally the best choice. You can then test if a device works by selecting the device and clicking on "Test" at the bottom.

Have you gone through the step-by-step Ubuntu sound trouble shooting guide ?

I'm not sure how up to date it is, but if you haven't already had a look it may be worth running through ; it's helped me to rectify any sound issues that I've had.
