GUI loging stopped workig after update

    Greetings,

I was away for a week and this morning got notification about pending updates, bug and security fixes, which I duly installed. After a reboot I am no longer able to login on any account using the GUI (KDE) interface. The screen blanks out displaying the rotating balls and comes back with the login dialog, as if the password failed but nothing is highlighted. I still can login from the console.

I tried to install GDM and use that but it gives me this error
    /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity check-2 exited with status 256

I'm running lucid 10.4.1 LTS with KDE 4 (don't know how to find out exactly)

    Any suggestions? TIA

    -aaron

      Thanks!

It appears that the Xapian filled out /var. It has been failing for some time now and I had a bug opened against it. It appears to have created and left behind dozens of index databases. I never looked into it until today.

This restore the ability for GUI login for every other account but mine.
I removed ~/.kde, ~/.Xauthority, ~/.ICEautoirity, even reinstalled KDM but to no avail. Is there any other config file that I can remove?

After removing .gtkrc-2.0-kde4 I was able to finally log in.
