    Character generator

Or at least that is what it is called in Windows.

Does Kubuntu 10.04 have a program that generate different characters? If so what is it called by?

    Re: Character generator

If you're accustomed to the Windows Alt-number combos, as described here: http://www.starr.net/is/type/altnum.htm

then you'll have to learn to come at the problem from a different direction, because that is a Windows-specific construct.

If your issue is a different language, you can use the KMenu > System Settings > Regional & Language utility, and install a different keyboard layout.

If you're after typographic symbols, beyond the ones that appear above the number keys on a standard U.S. keyboard, then you'll have to research it, but I'm sure Google can help you find a method, starting here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenType

What I am looking for is the copyright symbol 'circle c'

I'm wanting to create some copyright logos in Gimp.

All of the down loadable ones I have found doing a Google search are jpg versions but I need a typed one that can be placed onto a transparency using Gimp's text tool..

        Here you go:

        ©

How did he do that? I just opened Open Office Org > Writer, and in a new document did "Insert > Special Character" and selected the copyright mark. Of course you can then change the font and size as desired.

Gimp's text tool is very "dumb", as far as I can see. I don't think it has the copyright symbol in its repertoire. Probably you'll have to size a .jpeg image to suit your purpose.

          Thanks

I should have know OOo would have what I need. It's too bad Gimp's text tool doesn't have it.

I think what you're looking for is the compose key - or cut and paste.

Right here I can do © by doing RightAlt-o-c and I just tried it in the Gimp as well. For me the RightAlt is the compose key, but you can change it in KDE. Use a "win" key, for example. I use it all the time to do things like æ and ø. I guess it depends on the editor. The one that is being used in this box does not do ™, for example. But it will do § and ¢. Go figure. Anyway, you can cut and paste © into Gimp from some piece of text. I just tried that too, and it works.

                Specifically:

System Settings > Regional & Language > Keyboard Layout > Enable keyboard layouts
then under the Advanced tab select Compose key position and enable the compose key of your choice.

Key bindings can be found in /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose
