    Thunderbird 3.1 and Lightning 1.0b2

I'm using 32-bit version of Thunderbird, installed via Ubuntuzilla. I also used the Lightning extension, installed from Mozilla Add-ons site.

When I try to start Thunderbird, it places an icon in the application tray but after around 30 seconds the icon disappears and it never starts. I then use the console to open Thunderbird in safe mode and it starts right up. Close TB, restart normally, and TB starts as expected. If I exit and try to restart it, it fails (have to go into safe mode first, then restart).

I know I've read somewhere that there was initially a problem with Lightning and Thunderbird 3.1 with the Lucid upgrade (everything ran fine under Karmic for me) but launchpad indicates it's a x64 problem.

Has anyone had this problem (on 32-bit) and how did you get it working? thanks.

My thoughts are that you need a clean(ish) start.

Open your /home directory and select view/show hidden files. RENAME (DO NOT DELETE) the folders .thunderbird and/or .mozilla-thunderbird. My guess is you may have both (one may link to the other) which I think may be part of the problem.

Then start thunderbird. I believe it will start. You can then copy the contents of your old profile into the new default profile. If that works, great. If it doesn't then it's something in the profile causing it, in which case repeat the exercise then set up your e-mail (thunderbird is likely to automate that for you). Then copy the address book (mab) and calendar data into the new profile. You'll need to reinstall lightning.

If something goes wrong, eg you can't see the calendar- which is a possibility, by renaming the profiles you can always go back to 3.0 and your original profiles and then export your address book/calendar etc so that you can then import them into a totally clean 3.1.

    Hope this helps

TB and lightning work fine for me with version 3.0.5 on both 64 and 32 bit. Flawless with my Google calender. Is there some feature in 3.1 that you must have?
