    Small complaint

So, I'm more used to Pidgin/Empathy, but I've been using Kopete because it fits in with my KDE desktop (and because, honestly, I love it except for)...

'/me' doesn't work. I know, I know... it doesn't work for any of the 'real' IM clients. Yahoo, MSN, GTalk, and AIM all don't use it, so why should Kopete?

Well, all my friends (and previously myself) use Pidgin. And, we use the whole '/me' pseudo-command ALL THE TIME. And, I'd like to be able to use it in Kopete as well.

Is there a way to turn this on? If not, can someone point me to a programming API for making a simple Kopete plugin that will let me do this? I know some C/C++/Python.

Have you tried contacting the Kopete team? I'm sure they'd like to know of your project and they can probably help you more than anyone here.

Well, I'm just asking if it exists already or not before I go and start haphazardly flinging code everywhere.

From the "Settings" menu option choose "Configure".
Select the "Plugins" option from the bottom of the left panel.
In the right panel the first option is "Auto Replace".
Check its checkbox so you can click the "wrench" button to access its settings.
Enter "/me" in the "Text" text box. Put your name in the "Replacement" text box.
Click the apply button in the lower right corner.
        Click OK.

I thought about doing that, but that doesn't help with other people using '/me'. Is there some 'dummy' text I can put in that will automatically replace '/me' with the username of whoever says it? Like, %n or \n (n for name, though I realize that would usually be seen as a newline character)?

If the alias /me works, it works for the user who issues it. In that way, when the user types: /me agrees with that.
their application converts it to: Snowhog agrees with that.
which is what everyone on the channel sees in their application. That's the way it works.

I know that. But what I want is to also see when they use '/me', so I can see it replace the text with their name. That's what I want.

Also, I don't want it to physically change what I type; Pidgin will receive '/me', and on the server it's the text string '/me does this', but Pidgin displays it as "***Tynach does this".
