    No gmail access in kmail

A search with the terms 'gmail' and 'kmail' hs produced no results.

I installed Kubuntu 10.4 two days ago. And I am trying to use kmail to
access a gmail account. I consistently get the error notification Bad
username/password. I copied the settings from my main system which uses
kmail [1.9.10] with CentOS 5.4. The main machine can access the account but
    this installation can't.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled kmail.

I can reach the account from this machine, using a web interface using
    either Konqueror or Firefox.

I just installed sylpheed and I used that when I just register here.

I have email archives stretching back to 2000 that I need to migrate, which
is why I am trying to get kmail up and running.

I am not sure this is the right place to ask, if not could you please direct
me to a more appropriate location?

Thanks, in advance for any attention to this query.

Thanks for the quick reply. I did see that in my search and followed it. But there was no change. I am at a loss because sylpheed is working flawlessly with the account, and I have no trouble on two other machines. But neither of them is running kubuntu.

Well, in Gmail settings, make sure you have POP and/or IMAP enabled, etc. I personally recommend IMAP.

Then, set up an account accordingly. You may want to use the account setup wizard.

I myself have used Gmail with KMail using both POP and IMAP, and I can promise you both work when set up correctly.

Try this. I'm using Kubuntu 10.04 & it worked.

I note this is your first visit here, so welcome!

If you can't get kmail to work, don't forget you can also use thunderbird which, in my experience, will connect pretty much automatically.

            It's available in the repos.

              Welcome on the forums

No problems here. Just make sure you have POP3 enabled in GMail settings and you fill in the right servers.

              Receving mail:
              pop3.gmail.com

              Sending mail:
              smtp.gmail.com

Let KMail autodiscover which ports it needs and if it supports SSL etc.
And for both receving and sendig you have to tick the box for that it needs a login. username is you @gmail address, password is your password for you @gmail address.

              Hope this helps

                My Settings

Here are my KMail settings for Gmail. I will go through tab by tab, in the settings for my account (not identity; also, it's an IMAP account):
                • General
                  • Account name: Tynach2 - Gmail
                  • Incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com
                  • Port: 993
                  • tynach2@gmail.com
                  • Password: {password here}
                  • The rest of the settings on this tab are fairly obvious...

                • IMAP Settings
                  • I just used the defaults here.

                • Security
                  • Encryption: Use SSL for secure mail download
                  • Authentication Method: Clear text

                • Filtering
                  • I just used the defaults here.

Man, nested lists are tough here. Hope that all looks right!
