    Frequent crashes in several programs

Typing in the google search bar in firefox, pressing 'play' in audacity, splitting tabs in dolphin - I can't seem to catch a break!

I just did a clean install of 10.04 yesterday, added repos, and several programs (Audacity, Asunder, SoundConverter, Digikam, Gimp, Kolourpaint4, Wicd, Nicotine, Skype, VLC, Brasero, SimpleBackup) -

I think the most recent change I made was setting smooth tasks as my taskbar window managing widget instead of the default task manager. Is it possible this is all a plasma issue?

Each crash restarts kubuntu. I searched around a little and saw that several people have "come back to find their systems unlogged" - my system doesn't require login on startup, so I have a feeling it may be a similar problem. Unfortunately I'm really just an open-source enthusiast and not a programmer, so I'm still ignorant as to how to fetch crash/bug reports. (I've had a few prompts to file bug reports, but the KDE bugfix app always tells me my reports don't have sufficient info...)

Re: Frequent crashes in several programs

First off, a warm welcome to the forum!

Have you updated the package info and upgraded to KDE 4.4.4? There have been 2 sizeable upgrades of KDE since the launch of 10.04 .

      Sounds like video driver problems.

      In a konsole issue

      lspci

      and

      lshw

      and report back the results.

I'm on KDE 4.4.2, how should I upgrade, and do you think it will interfere with smooth tasks?

          To get 4.4.4, see here

          http://www.kubuntu.org/news

Looking at the output, and taking into account GGs comments, You seem to be running the nouveau video driver. Have you tried things with the nvidia driver? Try kmenu/applications/system/hardware drivers and after a scan you will I suspect be given the opportunity to download and install the nvidia drivers.

I am cursed with an intel 915 myself, but from what I hear, the nvidia driver may well transform your experience.

Liquidator is right, the proprietary NVidia driver may help.

Greygeek, I followed the instructions in that link and installed the Nvidia drivers through the Hardware Drivers application, but upon restart my system doesn't load any visuals! When i start the computer I can go through the boot menu (so the screen is still working), but after the first kubuntu boot screen everything just goes black. I can't even make it to the splash screen! Kubuntu is loading, since I'm still getting the startup tone and even managed to play a (recently opened) mp3 in amarok through the command line.

So now I'm stuck running it from the live cd. Is there anything I can do to salvage my installation? SimpleBackup should be running, but is there a way I could perhaps open and run it through Konsol?

I'm guessing there's no way to access my installation while using the live CD, huh?

Re: Frequent crashes in several programs

update : I finally got some help in quassel which fixed the most recent problem, which was to

1.) Go into dolphin and mount the hard drive as a device.
2.) Open the directory /media/etc/X11 in terminal
                3.) sudo mv xorg.conf xorg.conf.back
                4.) Restart the system

Upon restart, there was a decent-sized batch of security & bug fixes waiting. Installed those, I'll report if the crash problems continue.
