You probably just discovered why we have 3.10.2 in the repos .... 3.10.5 probably depends on versions of other packages that we don't have.

Why do you believe you need 3.10.5?

Yes, I know 3.10.2 is in the repos and I was using it. However, when an update of cups I believe started not to let the Hp driver to load. I had to restart my computer, sometimes 3 and 4 times to get the driver loaded. I did a google search and read somewhere that the newer version 3.10.5 might fix this. I did get 3.10.5 installed. I thought the universe and mulitverse repos were in my sources by default but obviously they were not. Once I put them in my sources list, 3.10.5 installed fine. Unfortunately it did not fix the problem. I have noticed that when I click the print button in an application the printer responds faster and the black print is a bit darker and the colors are a bit richer. So there was some improvement but not the fix I was looking for. I still don't know why my printer doesn't load on every boot. It worked flawlessly in 9.10 and it seemed to work fine in a new install of 10.04 until the update. How do you think I should proceed from here?

Is it a USB connection? If so, you might try leaving the printer turned off during boot, and then turning it on when the rest of the system is up.

I don't know for a fact what the problem is on your computer, but I do know that *buntu as well as Debian have been working very hard on speeding up the Linux boot process, and I fear they've pushed it to where things are squeezed to the breaking point. On my hardware, I get about 4 good boots for every 1 hang of Plymouth, and I've seen the fsck at boot time hang strangely too, just since 10.04. So, it would not surprise me to discover that the USB device detection routine that tries to happen during booting has been squeezed too hard, too. Just guessing, but those are my observations.

My Canon USB printer is working fine on the rare occasions when I use it, but I normally leave it turned off until I need a hardcopy of something.

Yes, it is a USB connection. I usually have the printer on because turning it on and off is a hassle. I'm in a wheelchair or mostly in bed when I need the printer and can't just jump up and turn it on. I have tried unplugging the usb cable then plugging it back in about a minute or so later but that doesn't work. It would be great if the OS turned it off when shutting down and on when I go to use it like Windows does. I really thought the boot time was great before, especially compared to Windows which takes 10 minutes or more. Why do they keep messing with stuff that don't need to be changed? All the supposedly better changes are causing me more problems and I can't be the only one. I feel if this keeps up I will be forced to use Windows again. This is really disheartening. I've had the fsck hang on me too. Just this morning the Nvidia driver I installed, that you helped me with, did not load on boot and I had to restart my machine again. It these kind of inconsistencies that made me look for another OS in the 1st place. Is Kubuntu regressing? It sure seems so to me. I don't know. Frustrating.
