Can't update, dist-upgrade, or install anything.

First, on this partition Karmic was installed. Then a Dist-Upgrade was done through Konsole. It has KDE SC 4.4.2.

Update manager waiting for manager lock. I tried doing "sudo dpkg --configure -a". It didn't help.

I seem to remember something similar happened to me, this is what I did...
If you open up System Monitor, you may find that a process for updating may be responsible. The process name may not be obvious, I think it may be listed just as python, but if you just mouse over the name, you may find that it's for updates - then just kill it, and then you should be able to update and upgrade,
