    Akonadi Error crashes kmail

    Hi

    Using T'Bird and Lightning but decided to take another look at the kde pim apps.

    Am currently unable to get past first base. On configuring kmail I click OK and the akonadi dialog comes up. This contains errors. On electing to close the dialog box it takes kmail with it and when I reload I find the configuration hasn't stuck.

    Attached is the akonadi log file. Any clues as to how I can make it work would be helpful as it was this very same issue that has prevented me from ever seriously looking at kmail?

    Thanks

    Re: Akonadi Error crashes kmail

    Yep, same problem here, and apparently, many other places too, cf.
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...di/+bug/564263

    The conclusion reached on the above site seems to be that for some reason Akonadi is not launched in Lucid by default, although Akonadi is required by the address book in Kontact. When you start Kontact, Kontact takes shorter time to start up than Akonadi, so by the time Kontact is ready, Akonado is not. Their provisional solution: shut down Kontact completely and then restart it. By then Akonadi should be ready. (It works on my laptop.)

    An alternative solution suggested on the above site is
    QUOTE
    -> Go to System Preferences
    -> Open Autostart
    -> Add program...
    -> insert: akonadictl start
    -> Select "start in terminal" (or something like that)
    -> Ok
    -> Ok
    -> Close program and restart (K)Ubuntu.
    ENDQUOTE

    Another take on the issue... it occurred to me that perhaps.....:
    When I started Kontact the first times, before I had installed any contacts (I've just installed to Lucid from scratch), there were no error messages for Akonadi. This may of course be because there were no contacts.
    However, since I needed a cabled internet connection to download the WIFI driver, my laptop was battery-powered for a while, and by default, it automatically "suspended to RAM" (i.e. went to sleep) after being unattended for a few minutes. As a result network manager disabled itself (sic). (A real downer, let me tell you). This proved to be easily remedied, however, and of course I altered the settings for "power save".

    Could this Akonadi issue be related? I mean, could Akonadi startup also have disabled itself? Just a wild idea, but I thought I'd just mention it.

    By the way, the same "Akonadi Server Self-Test Report" as mine is repeated on most, but not all of the forums where I have seen the problem reported. In short, it says that everything is OK, just that agents are missing.

    The other variety is the missing bus connection, which is the one you have, Liquidator, now that I take a closer look at your attachment. Sorry. So in reality, these might be two unrelated problems. On the other hand, maybe they are not.

      Thanks for the input

      I recall previously that when I had Akonadi loading at startup that I got precisely the same messages, and concluded that until there was a way to make it work properly I would leave kmail etc alone. I followed the instructions at the kde-tech site on how to stop it running at startup, but which should have left me with the option to start it manually, or at least on launching an akonadi-dependent application.

      Seems I'm no further forward at this point
