    Kaffeine/VLC trouble with m4v files (also Handbrake trouble)

    Kaffeine / VLC won't play my m4v files. I've got only two, ripped from my own DVDs. I could play them fine in Lucid. I don't know what I'm missing; I've installed kubuntu-restricted-extras and just about everything from medibuntu. Other videos work fine including videos encoded with xvid, x264, ffmpeg.

    1)

    Kaffeine:
    "cannot find demux plugin for MRL (blah blah, file path here)"

    VLC:
    $ vlc Serenity.m4v
    VLC media player 1.0.6 Goldeneye
    [0x8549318] mp4 demux error: MP4 plugin discarded (no moov box)
    [mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x857dea0]moov atom not found
    [0x8549318] avformat demux error: av_open_input_stream failed

    The VLC GUI appears, but no video/audio playback.

    2)

    Kaffeine:
    crash dialogue with "floating point exception".

    VLC:
    Video plays correctly in VLC:

    $ vlc Dead\ Man.m4v
    VLC media player 1.0.6 Goldeneye
    [0x9bfaad0] a52 decoder: A/52 channels:2 samplerate:48000 bitrate:192000
    QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 1
    QPainter::setClipRegion: Painter not active
    QPainter::setClipping: Painter not active, state will be reset by begin

    Also, and I have no idea if this is related, the Handbrake DVD ripper doesn't work in Karmic. It appears to read the DVD source /dev/sr0 correctly, but it will only ever let me choose one DVD title, with no audio tracks, no subtitles, and no way to actually start encoding!

    Edit: I'm willing to consider it possible that video file #1 is corrupt, and concentrate on #2
