Open Office hangs in "Save as"

I have a document in odt format that I am working on. As soon as I try to save it as a Word doc document, the "Save as" window hangs and I have to kill Open Office. From that point on, the document is unsaveable in any format, giving rise to the same hang. I had to copy the text to Kate, then create and reformat a new Oofice document, which was not fun.

Any ideas?

How long did you wait before killing it? My OOo occasionally hangs on Save As for several minutes with some strange activity as if it is scanning all 2TB of my disks . It eventually does its job however. Very annoying.

found this older karmic thread (http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3108682.0) that covers the same issue. The 2 solutions seem to be :

1. remove openoffice.org-gtk
2.

select Tools>Options>General (second item under the OpenOffice.org category there) and tick "Use OpenOffice.org dialogs"

I guess you may as well try (2) and if you don't get any noticeable improvement then try (1).

Did I read wrong? I thought it said one could try to install openoffice.org-gtk and/or delete openoffice.org-kde.

I did change the dialogs. The result is kind of ugly, but it does seem to work. I will wait to see how long it works before closing this discussion.

I agree -- it's not the perfect solution but it's definitely preferable to waiting half an hour to save a text doc

An 'option' is to Save as .rtf and be done with it. M$ Word reads .rtf files natively, and all formatting is retained.
